Where the date stands today
Official. As of today, September 23, 2026, nothing has changed. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for Thursday, November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the date Rockstar announced on November 6, 2025 and has not altered since.
The most recent corporate confirmation came on August 7, 2026, when Take-Two reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 results. The earnings release listed GTA VI for November 19, 2026 with no qualifier, Zelnick repeated the date on the call, and the company reiterated fiscal 2027 net bookings guidance of $8.0 to $8.2 billion — a forecast built on the game shipping inside that fiscal year. He also described pre-orders as “unprecedented and astonishing”.
One nuance worth having straight, because coverage disagrees. At Take-Two’s annual shareholder meeting on September 17, 2026, a shareholder challenged management over “years of delays, missed expectations”. Zelnick pushed back on the framing — “I would, however, quibble with your characterization in the question” — and pivoted to the company’s performance since 2007. Several outlets wrote this up as Zelnick maintaining the November 19 date; Kotaku’s account of the same exchange notes he did not restate a date in that answer. Nothing turns on it either way, since the August 7 reaffirmation is more recent than any date statement would have been useful, but it is a reminder that “CEO reaffirms date” headlines are sometimes describing a question he declined to answer.
The two delays, exactly
Official. Both delays came from Rockstar directly, in Rockstar’s own words, on the Newswire. Neither leaked first.
| Date announced | Moved from | Moved to | Notice given |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 4, 2023 | — | Revealed with Trailer 1 for a 2025 window | — |
| May 2, 2025 | 2025 | May 26, 2026 | Against an open window |
| November 6, 2025 | May 26, 2026 | November 19, 2026 | 201 days |
The November 2025 statement is the one people quote:
“Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026. We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.” — Rockstar Games Newswire, November 6, 2025
Two details from that history are routinely lost. The first delay was announced on May 2, 2025 and Trailer 2 arrived four days later, on May 6 — Rockstar cushioning bad news with the biggest reveal it had. And the second delay landed the same day as Take-Two’s quarterly earnings report. That pairing matters again at the end of this page.
What Zelnick said before each one
Analysis. Almost every “GTA 6 will not be delayed again” article rests on the same foundation: the CEO said so. It is worth checking what that has been worth historically, because the record is unambiguous.
| When | What Zelnick said about the then-current date | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| February 2025 (IGN), on fall 2025 | “Look, there’s always a risk of slippage and I think as soon as you say words like ‘absolutely,’ you jinx things. So we feel really good about it.” | Delayed three months later |
| August 2025 (CNBC), on May 26, 2026 | “[My] level of conviction is very, very high, obviously.” | Delayed three months later |
| November 2025 (IGN), on November 19, 2026 | “I’m highly confident… I’m highly confident on the new date.” | Holding, 57 days out |
That is nought for two on high-confidence statements, with the strongest wording — “very, very high” — attached to the date that moved with 201 days still on the clock. Zelnick is not lying in any of these; a CEO relays what the studio tells him, and Rockstar evidently changed its own mind late both times. But it does mean the sentence “Take-Two says it will not be delayed” carries no predictive weight. It was equally true in February 2025 and August 2025.
So the honest version of this question is not what has Take-Two promised. It is what has Take-Two done that it cannot cheaply undo.
What is locked this time
Official. This is the part that is genuinely different, and it is why the answer today is not the answer it would have been a year ago. Each of the following existed on neither of the two occasions Rockstar pulled a date.
| Commitment | Since | Present before the 2025 delays? |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-orders taking real money across the Rockstar Store, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and major retailers | June 25, 2026 | No |
| A fixed preload date of November 12, 2026, stated in Take-Two’s June 24 pre-order announcement | June 24, 2026 | No |
| Physical code-in-a-box stock dated to the same November 12 on-sale date | June 24, 2026 | No |
| 27 minutes of gameplay published as the Extended Look | August 27, 2026 | No |
| Per-country release timestamps on PlayStation Store listings across 63 countries | September 2026 | No |
| Fiscal 2027 guidance of $8.0–8.2bn, filed and publicly reiterated | Reiterated August 7, 2026 | Guidance existed, but not this specific |
The storefront timestamps are the most underrated item on that list. Publishing a delay means unwinding dated listings in 63 separate markets, and those listings are the mechanism by which a change becomes visible to everyone within minutes. Preload is the harder deadline still: it is 50 days away, and a game that is not finished enough to start pushing files to consoles in seven weeks is not a game that quietly slips a fortnight.
Rockstar published Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on August 27, 2026. Studios sitting on a slipping date do not generally release 27 minutes of running gameplay 12 weeks out — though it is worth remembering Trailer 2 arrived four days after a delay, so marketing volume alone proves nothing.
Rockstar delays early, not late
Analysis. Rockstar has a long, consistent habit here, and it is the single most useful pattern for answering this question.
| Game | Delay announced | Abandoned target | New date | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GTA V | January 31, 2013 | Spring 2013 (window) | September 17, 2013 | Held |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | May 22, 2017 | Fall 2017 (window) | Spring 2018 (window) | Moved again |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | February 1, 2018 | Spring 2018 (window) | October 26, 2018 | Held |
| GTA VI | May 2, 2025 | 2025 (window) | May 26, 2026 | Moved again |
| GTA VI | November 6, 2025 | May 26, 2026 (fixed day) | November 19, 2026 | Holding |
Read the “abandoned target” column. Four of those five delays gave up a window — a season or a year — not a specific day. Rockstar has abandoned a fixed single calendar date exactly once in this entire history, May 26, 2026, and it did so 201 days in advance.
Every time Rockstar has named a specific day and then got within two months of it, the game shipped on that day: GTA V on September 17, 2013, Red Dead Redemption 2 on October 26, 2018. We are at 57 days. There is no precedent in Rockstar’s history for a delay from here.
This is pattern analysis, not a guarantee — five data points is a small sample, and a studio can always do something it has not done before. But it is a considerably better basis for an answer than a quote from an executive whose last two identical quotes were both wrong.
The 2027 rumor, traced
Rumor. If you have seen a claim that GTA 6 has already been pushed to 2027, it has one identifiable origin, and it does not survive being looked at.
An X account posting as @ProjectsCityHD — roughly 1,300 followers, no prior record of accurate Rockstar information — posted that Grand Theft Auto VI had been delayed to 2027 and that details were coming “soon”. No detail ever arrived. The claim travelled because the official Rockstar Games account follows that profile, which reads as significant until you check: Rockstar’s account follows more than a thousand profiles, including fan pages, modders and content creators. A social team clicking follow during routine community engagement is not a source.
Set against that: an SEC-filed revenue forecast, live storefront listings, and a preload date. When an anonymous account and a financial filing disagree, this is not a close call. GTA BOOM traced the same rumor to the same origin and reached the same conclusion.
The broader point is one we keep making — see the story leaks and rumors hub and our rumor policy. Release dates are among the most verifiable facts in games. They live on public storefronts in dozens of countries. Anyone with real advance knowledge of a change would be contradicted by those listings within days, and anyone without it is guessing in front of an audience that rewards guessing.
What a real delay would look like
Rather than refreshing rumor accounts, watch the four places a genuine change would surface. All four are public.
- The Rockstar Newswire. Both delays were announced there first, in Rockstar’s own words. This is the only source that settles it.
- Storefront release dates. The PlayStation and Microsoft product pages carry the date, and now the hour. A change there is fast, public and hard to walk back.
- Take-Two’s next earnings report. This is the one scheduled event left that could plausibly carry a date change — and it deserves a flag, because the November 6, 2025 delay was announced on the day of Take-Two’s second-quarter earnings. The equivalent report falls in roughly the same early-November window this year. By then, however, preload on November 12 is days away, which narrows what a delay could even mean.
- The guidance number. If $8.0–8.2bn in fiscal 2027 net bookings is ever revised downward without another explanation, the date is the explanation.
What would not tell you anything: Rockstar going quiet, a ratings board entry appearing late, marketing feeling sparse, or the absence of a third trailer. Rockstar has never marketed like other publishers, which we have written about at length in why GTA 6 does not need normal marketing. Silence is its default state, not a symptom.
Our position, stated plainly so it can be held against us: we expect GTA 6 to ship on November 19, 2026, we do not think anyone can be certain, and if it moves we will say so here the day Rockstar posts it.
Frequently asked questions
- Will GTA 6 be delayed again?
- Nobody outside Rockstar can promise it will not, but the evidence is stronger than it has ever been. GTA 6 has a fixed date of November 19, 2026, announced November 6, 2025. Rockstar has never moved a fixed single-day release date this close to launch. Pre-orders have been taking money since June 25, 2026, preload is set for November 12, and PlayStation Store listings already carry per-country unlock timestamps. None of that existed before either previous delay.
- How many times has GTA 6 been delayed?
- Twice. GTA 6 was revealed in December 2023 for a 2025 window. On May 2, 2025 Rockstar moved it to May 26, 2026. On November 6, 2025, alongside Take-Two quarterly earnings, Rockstar moved it again to Thursday, November 19, 2026, saying the extra months would allow it to finish the game with the level of polish players have come to expect and deserve.
- Has GTA 6 been delayed to 2027?
- No. The 2027 claim traces to a single X account with roughly 1,300 followers and no track record, which posted that the game had been delayed and that details were coming soon. It spread because the official Rockstar Games account follows that profile, but Rockstar follows more than a thousand accounts including fan pages and creators. Rockstar has published nothing, and Take-Two reaffirmed November 19, 2026 on its August 7, 2026 earnings call.
- Can Take-Two still delay GTA 6 after pre-orders opened?
- Legally yes, and pre-orders would be refunded. Practically it becomes far more expensive with every week that passes, because a delay now would mean unwinding storefront listings in 63 countries, a fixed November 12 preload date, physical code-in-a-box stock already in retail distribution, and revenue guidance of 8.0 to 8.2 billion dollars that Take-Two has filed with the SEC and reiterated publicly.
- What would a real GTA 6 delay announcement look like?
- A post on the Rockstar Games Newswire. Both previous delays were announced there, in Rockstar's own words, and the second landed on the same day as Take-Two quarterly earnings. A delay would not leak out through an anonymous social account first, and it would show up almost immediately as changed release dates on the PlayStation and Microsoft storefronts.
