The GTA 6 map is Leonida, Rockstar's fictional version of Florida, and it's the biggest world the studio has ever built. Rockstar describes it as twice as large as GTA V's map, split into 6 regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. "Twice as large" doesn't mean what many players assume, though, and nearly every region has a real Florida place behind it.
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Official In Game Informer's cover story, Rockstar co-studio head Aaron Garbut calls Leonida the biggest map Rockstar has ever made "by some degree" and describes it as twice as large as GTA V. He also calls it more dense, detailed and interactive.
The catch: Rockstar never said what "twice as large" measures. Twice the area, or twice as long and twice as wide? If every side doubled, the map would cover 4 times the area.
Our read: the phrase describes overall size, so expect a world roughly double GTA V's. If it were 4 times bigger, Rockstar would almost certainly have said so.
The layout differs, too. GTA V paired a single city, Los Santos, with Blaine County. Official Leonida pairs Vice City, the only major city Rockstar has named, with 5 more regions, each with its own landscape, people and problems.
It's about density, not just size
Garbut's real point is density. Rockstar kept adding interiors until it reached what he calls a critical mass, where buildings start to feel real inside and out.
We obsessed about every part – the rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between.
Aaron Garbut, Rockstar Games, to Game Informer
He calls the result a cohesive whole with a hand-crafted quality throughout. So don't picture twice as much empty highway. Picture twice the world, packed tighter.
Official Getting around changes as well: the in-game map now looks like satellite imagery, and a ride-share app, RydeMe, works as fast travel.

Leonida's 6 regions at a glance
Game Informer drew the Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn and Mount Kalaga comparisons. The other real-world matches are our read.
| Region | Real Florida match | What Rockstar has shown |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Miami | Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market, the VC Port |
| Leonida Keys | The Florida Keys | Causeways over turquoise water, seaplanes, boats |
| Grassrivers | The Everglades | Airboats, alligators, a swamp police chase, a hunting camp |
| Port Gellhorn | Florida's struggling tourist-trap towns | Cheap motels, shut-down attractions, empty strip malls |
| Ambrosia | Sugar country around Lake Okeechobee | The Allied Crystal sugar refinery, smokestacks, bikers |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | The Florida-Georgia line | Canyons, forest, hunting, fishing, off-road trails |
Vice City: everything in excess
Official Rockstar's tagline for Vice City is "Everything in Excess," and its official site still calls the city "the sun and fun capital of America." This is Vice City's fourth appearance, after the original Grand Theft Auto (1997), GTA Vice City (2002) and Vice City Stories (2006). Official Game Informer confirms it has been completely rebuilt, expanded and moved to the modern day.

4 named places, 4 real Miami twins
Official Rockstar has named 4 places in the city, and each has a real-world parallel (the matches are our read):
- Ocean Beach: pastel art deco hotels and white sand, like Miami Beach's Ocean Drive. It was also a district in the 2002 original.
- Little Cuba: busy panaderías (bakeries), like Little Havana, the heart of Miami's Cuban community.
- The Tisha-Wocka flea market: home of the bootleg brands. The name echoes Opa-locka, a real city just north of Miami, and the Opa-locka/Hialeah flea market.
- The VC Port: Rockstar's "cruise ship capital of the world," almost exactly how PortMiami markets itself: the "Cruise Capital of the World."
Official Game Informer adds deco architecture, scenic beaches and traffic so congested that police chases get harder. Marcus Stewart, the cover story's author, says the narrow streets and twisting suspended freeways give him the same mild anxiety as driving in Miami, and calls this the first Vice City that feels genuinely familiar.
Official Pause Rockstar's footage and you'll spot more names: highway signs to the airport, Downtown, Ambrosia and Peacock Bay, the Effluvia rooftop bar, and an elevated train curving past Megamundo signage.
Official Much of the cast lives here, including Boobie Ike, a local legend with real estate, a strip club called the Jack of Hearts and a recording studio, Only Raw Records, run with his partner Dre'Quan. Our characters guide covers the rest.
Official Rockstar keeps winking at the past, too: the pre-order Vintage Vice City Pack includes a '55 Vapid Stanier with a garage near Ocean Beach and a weapon pattern inspired by Tommy Vercetti's palm-tree shirt. Our editions guide lists every bonus.
The Leonida Keys: gateway to paradise
Official Rockstar's tagline for the island chain is "Gateway to Paradise," and it sells the Keys as a laid-back tropical archipelago: casual clothes, loaded bars, nothing flashy. It's clearly modeled on the Florida Keys, the real islands strung together by the Overseas Highway and long bridges like the Seven Mile Bridge. The official screenshots match: long causeways over turquoise water, seaplanes and boats everywhere.

Official There's an edge, though. Rockstar warns that the waters around the Keys are as dangerous as they are beautiful, and our read is that it doesn't mean sharks. This is Jason Duval's home turf, where he works for local drug runners like Brian Heder, a smuggler from what Rockstar calls the golden age of smuggling in the Keys. Brian still moves product through his boat yard with his wife, Lori, and lets Jason live rent-free in one of his properties.
That mirrors real history: in the 1970s and '80s, the Florida Keys were a smuggling route for boats and planes running loads in from the Caribbean. Official Rockstar hasn't named a Key West yet, so the towns along the chain remain a mystery.
Grassrivers: Leonida's Everglades
Official Rockstar calls Grassrivers "the untamable jewel of Leonida's crown" and warns that you never know what's under the surface. Alligators are the headline act, but deadlier predators and "weirder discoveries" wait among the mangroves.
Official Game Informer confirms it's Leonida's Everglades, an expansive, biodiverse wetland full of reptilian predators and "questionably friendly, probably armed outdoorsmen." A magazine caption sums it up as Leonida's three A's: alligators, airboats and armed outdoorsmen. The screenshots show a police chase through the swamp with gators in the water and an airboat behind, a stilt-house settlement with alligators below the dock, and a hunting camp where a gator hangs from the rafters.

The real Everglades had a notorious era as a drug-smuggling hotspot, and Stewart hopes Grassrivers keeps that underlying sense of danger. As for the weirder discoveries, Rockstar isn't saying.
Port Gellhorn: Leonida's forgotten coast
Official Rockstar introduces Port Gellhorn as "Leonida's forgotten coast," a once-popular vacation spot where cheap motels, shut-down attractions and empty strip malls have stopped drawing tourists. The new economy, Rockstar says, runs on malt liquor, painkillers and truck-stop energy drinks, and its advice is to grab a dirt bike and keep a hand on your wallet.
Official Game Informer says the region represents Florida's smaller, struggling tourist-trap towns. The screenshots show a run-down town glowing at sunset, the Starlet Motel and a cabaret called Delights.

Here's the clever part: "the Forgotten Coast" is the real tourism nickname for a quiet stretch of Florida's Panhandle on the Gulf of Mexico. Official Asked about Leonida's north, Rockstar's Paul MacPherson told Game Informer the team studied Panama City, a Panhandle beach town, plus Jacksonville, Ocala and small rural towns, and that economically struggling west coast towns fit the north's story.
So was the Panhandle cut? Our read: it looks more like it was folded into Port Gellhorn, though we don't know exactly where Port Gellhorn sits on the map yet.
Ambrosia: sugar, smoke and bikers
Official Rockstar calls Ambrosia the heart of Leonida, and its tagline sounds like a political thriller: "The battle for the health and wealth of Leonida begins here." American industry and old-school values still rule, whatever the cost, and Rockstar says the Allied Crystal sugar refinery supplies the jobs while a local biker gang supplies nearly everything else.
Official Rockstar's screenshots show bikers rolling down the main road, a skyline of smokestacks at night, a tattooed biker couple and a full-on mud party with mud-caked trucks.

The name is a hint: in Greek myth, ambrosia is the food of the gods. Our read: the region draws on Florida's sugar heartland around Lake Okeechobee, where the town of Clewiston calls itself "America's Sweetest Town." That gives the health-and-wealth tagline an edge. If Vice City is excess with a dress code, Ambrosia is excess with mud on its boots.
Mount Kalaga National Park and the Gloriana line
Official Rockstar pitches Mount Kalaga National Park as "room to breathe on the state's northern fringes." It's a national landmark on the northern border with prime hunting, fishing and off-road trails, and Rockstar says its backwoods are home to "hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals" living far from the government's prying eyes.
Florida has no mountains. Its highest point, Britton Hill, sits at just 345 feet, so a mountain is a real creative liberty. The screenshots show genuine elevation: red rock canyons, a highway cutting through a gorge and a news helicopter over a forested ridge.

Official Game Informer calls this country-feeling north an overlooked part of Florida. MacPherson says the team focused on the lumber industry and deforested zones, and found gated communities built around private jets with their own landing strips. His countryside list reads like a bucket list:
- ATV trails and a drunken mud park party
- Destruction derbies on floodlit oval tracks at night
- Mountain bike trails, farms, ranches and a luxury private golf course
- Dirt bikes on coastal dunes and bass fishing on lakes draped in Spanish moss
- Beaches inspired by Black Rock and Boneyard, real beaches on Big Talbot Island near Jacksonville
Official Game Informer says Mount Kalaga represents the culture of the Florida-Georgia line, which in GTA's universe is the Leonida-Gloriana line. So Georgia finally has a GTA name, Gloriana, though Rockstar hasn't said whether you can cross into it.
A living map: weather, wildlife and water
Leonida doesn't just look different from region to region; it behaves differently. Official Even NPC fashion and tattoo styles vary by area to match local communities.
Weather, tropical storms and hurricanes
Official Rockstar rebuilt the weather to be localized and persistent. Rain can soak one neighborhood while the next stays sunny, puddles stick around afterward and rainbows appear in the right light. Tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed.

Animals, hunting and fishing
Official More than 170 species live across Leonida's cities and countryside, inland waters, the ocean and the wetlands, from manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators to invasive green iguanas and rhesus macaque monkeys. Animals you can track are sorted into rare, discoverable and legendary, and Rockstar is keeping their identities secret. For hunting and fishing, Rockstar pitches Mount Kalaga as prime territory, Grassrivers has its hunting camp and MacPherson's list includes bass fishing.
Diving, boats and the water
Official Game Informer's list of confirmed activities includes scuba diving, jet skiing, air boating and kayaking. Our read: the Keys are the obvious place to dive and jet ski, and Grassrivers is made for airboats and kayaks.
What's missing from the map (our take)
Official The biggest gap so far is central Florida. Orlando, its theme parks and the Space Coast, home of Cape Canaveral and NASA's Kennedy Space Center, haven't appeared in anything Rockstar has shown. Asked directly, MacPherson told Game Informer the team weighs landscapes, towns, landmarks, even plant species and rock formations, and narrows them down to what serves the game.
So, while we may not have those exact locations, everything we have is geared to getting that full Florida experience!
Paul MacPherson, Rockstar Games, to Game Informer
Our read: that sounds like no giant theme-park parody and no rocket launches, at least not as we know them. Official Rockstar has also named only one major city, so if there's a second skyline, it hasn't been shown. Liberty City exists in this world as part of Lucia Caminos' backstory, but there's no sign you'll visit it.
We think that's the right call. Leonida isn't a copy of Florida; it's an edit, with a mountain the real state lacks, the Panhandle seemingly folded into Port Gellhorn and theme-park country apparently skipped, all to fit 6 distinct regions around one dense city. That's why "twice the size" undersells and oversells it at once: the footprint looks roughly double GTA V's, but by Rockstar's account the world is denser and more detailed.
