What the filing actually says
Official document — not an announcement. This is genuinely new territory. Rockstar has never published anything about a GTA 6 online mode: no name, no date, no feature list, no player count. The sentence below, from the company's own submission to an employment tribunal, is the first time a number attached to a GTA 6 online format has appeared in a document Rockstar wrote.
"Other Claimants in Room C were candidly referencing game features – one of the most closely guarded secrets of the company. Two discussed an online 32 player format which was highly confidential at that time."
— from Rockstar's submission to the Glasgow employment tribunal, as reported by GTA BOOM and Game Rant, September 2026
Read the sentence for what it is doing. Rockstar is not describing GTA 6. Rockstar is describing an act of disclosure, and the whole rhetorical weight of the passage sits on the words "closely guarded" and "highly confidential." The player format is mentioned only as the thing that was leaked. Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar's head of publishing, is reported to have called seeing staff share online player numbers "extraordinarily alarming" — again, a statement about secrecy, not about the game.
Three things follow from that, and all three get dropped in the retelling:
- It is retrospective. The phrase "at that time" is doing real work. The conversation happened before the dismissals in 2025 — at least a year before launch, in a project that has been in development for well over a decade.
- It is second-hand within the document. Rockstar is characterising what two employees said to each other in a chat channel, not quoting a design document.
- It is not a commitment. Nothing in the filing says the format shipped, survived, or was ever more than one option among several.
Several outlets still converted it into a headline. TweakTown ran with Rockstar "testing 32-player lobbies"; others used "leaked" and "revealed." The filing supports none of those verbs. To their credit, both Dexerto and Game Rant flagged the limits in their own copy — Dexerto noting it "only states that a 32-player format was being discussed," Game Rant calling the mention "extremely brief."
Why GTA 6 details ended up in a court case
Credible report. The context matters, because it explains why this fragment exists and why there probably will not be many more like it.
In 2025 Rockstar dismissed 34 staff — 31 in the UK and three in Canada — saying they had shared confidential information in a private Discord server operated by the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain. The IWGB says the dismissals were an attack on union activity, and 31 former employees are bringing claims of unfair dismissal. The final hearing opened at the Glasgow Tribunals Centre on September 10, 2026 and is scheduled to run until October 16 — about a month before GTA 6 ships on November 19, 2026.
To argue that a confidentiality breach was serious, Rockstar has to describe what was disclosed. That is the only reason a GTA 6 feature is in a public record at all. The same submissions describe the lengths the studio goes to otherwise: visitors signing NDAs, contractors escorted by security, external storage devices banned, personal phones and laptops blocked from company systems, and — per reporting on the hearing — privacy film fitted to office windows after drones were used to photograph screens from outside.
There is an irony worth stating plainly. A company arguing in court that its online player format is one of its most closely guarded secrets has, by making that argument, published the number. We are reporting the document, not the leak; GTAWiki does not link to or republish leaked builds or stolen footage, as our rumor policy sets out.
The part nobody mentions: 32 is already GTA Online's number
Analysis, built on documented fact. Here is the context that reframes the whole story, and it is almost entirely missing from the coverage.
A GTA Online session today holds 30 active players plus 2 spectator slots on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Thirty plus two is thirty-two. And "32 players" is not a coincidental sum — it is the phrasing Rockstar's own storefront copy has used before. When Grand Theft Auto V and Online: Expanded and Enhanced was listed on the Xbox Store, the description said 32 players could be in a single online session. Players read it as an increase; Rockstar clarified that the count was unchanged, and that 32 meant 30 players plus two spectators.
| Platform generation | Session capacity | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PS3 / Xbox 360 (2013) | 16 players | Rockstar's launch trailer described "a persistent online world for 16 players." |
| PS4 / Xbox One / PC | 30 players + 2 spectators | 32 total session slots. |
| PS5 / Xbox Series X|S | 30 players + 2 spectators | Unchanged in Expanded and Enhanced, despite a store listing that read as 32. |
| GTA 6 online mode | Unannounced | A "32 player format" was discussed internally at some point before 2025. |
So the honest reading of the tribunal clause is not "GTA 6 Online will hold 32 players." It is closer to: at some point, someone inside Rockstar was working with the same session architecture GTA Online already uses. That could mean the technology carries forward. It could mean an internal build was running on GTA Online's existing networking while something else was designed. It could mean 32 was one configuration under test. The filing cannot distinguish between those, and neither can we.
What it does do is puncture the expectation that has built up around this mode. A lot of the speculation assumes GTA 6's online component will jump to a much larger shared world — the sort of numbers FiveM roleplay servers run on PC. Nothing in the public record points that way. The one number that exists is the number Rockstar has been shipping since 2014.
Four readings of one clause, ranked by support
Analysis. Every claim you will see about this story is one of the following. Only the first is actually supported.
| Claim | Support | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| A 32-player online format was discussed inside Rockstar before 2025, and Rockstar treated it as highly confidential. | Rockstar's own tribunal submission, quoted directly. | Supported. This is the whole of the evidence. |
| GTA 6 Online will have 32-player lobbies. | Inference from the above. | Unconfirmed. Plausible, undated, never stated. |
| Rockstar is testing 32-player lobbies. | None. The filing does not mention testing. | Not supported. Added by headlines. |
| GTA 6 Online's player count has been confirmed / revealed / leaked. | None. | False. A litigation document is not a reveal. |
This is the same drift we have traced on other pages — the "700+ enterable buildings" figure, the twelve-station radio lineup, the three named endings. One hedged source, amplified until the hedges fall off. What is unusual here is that the originating document is Rockstar's own writing, which makes the number harder to dismiss and the overreach easier to commit.
What Rockstar has actually said about GTA 6 online
Official, and it is short. Set the filing aside and the record is close to empty:
- Nothing in the launch materials. Every official edition description sells the Jason and Lucia campaign. No multiplayer mode, no servers, no online progression appears anywhere in them. Our edition comparison goes through what is actually in each tier.
- Take-Two's position. GTA Online continues, and a new online component tied to GTA 6 arrives after launch. No date, no name, no features. The online and multiplayer at launch tracker covers this and the GTA 5 precedent in full.
- A credible report on the silence. In a video published August 7, 2026, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier said Rockstar has no plans to talk about GTA 6's online mode anytime soon — and was careful to call that an observation about the marketing rather than a leak.
- Nothing in the showcase. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look ran roughly 26 minutes on August 27, 2026 and was entirely single-player. Our Extended Look breakdown lists every system it did confirm, from six-star wanted levels to character switching.
Meanwhile GTA Online itself is still running weekly — if you are playing in the run-up to launch, the GTA Online section tracks the current events and money routes.
What would settle this
- Rockstar announcing the mode. A Newswire post with a name and a player count ends the question in one line. Schreier's reporting suggests that is not imminent.
- A storefront listing. Console store pages carry player-count metadata, and GTA Online's own history shows the listing arrives before the marketing does. If a GTA 6 online product page appears, the number will be on it.
- Further tribunal documents. The hearing runs to October 16, and submissions are public. More detail could surface the same accidental way this did — though Rockstar now has every reason to be less specific.
- Launch and after. If the online component follows the GTA 5 pattern and lands within weeks of November 19, the answer becomes something anyone can count in a lobby.
Until one of those happens, the accurate summary is one sentence: a 32-player online format was discussed inside Rockstar at some point before 2025, Rockstar considers the subject a closely guarded secret, and 32 happens to be exactly how many slots a GTA Online session has held for the last decade.
Frequently asked questions
- How many players will GTA 6 Online have?
- Rockstar has not announced a player count for GTA 6's online mode, and has not announced the mode itself. The number circulating is 32, and it comes from Rockstar's written submission to a Glasgow employment tribunal, which says two of the claimants "discussed an online 32 player format which was highly confidential at that time." That is a description of a past internal conversation used to argue the information was secret. It is not a specification, it carries no date, and Rockstar has never said it is the shipping figure.
- Is 32 players confirmed for GTA 6 Online?
- No. Headlines saying the count was confirmed, revealed or leaked are overstating a single clause in a legal filing. The document confirms only that a 32-player format existed as a topic of discussion inside Rockstar at some point before the dismissals in 2025, and that Rockstar considered it confidential. Several outlets went further and reported that Rockstar is testing 32-player lobbies; the filing does not say that. Treat 32 as the most specific number in the public record and as nothing more.
- How many players does GTA Online have now?
- Thirty active players per session on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, plus two spectator slots — thirty-two total slots. Older PS3 and Xbox 360 sessions held sixteen. The thirty-two figure already has history: when Grand Theft Auto V and Online: Expanded and Enhanced appeared on the Xbox Store, the listing said thirty-two players in a single session, and Rockstar clarified that this meant thirty players plus two spectators rather than any increase.
- Why were GTA 6 details in a court case at all?
- Rockstar dismissed 34 staff in 2025 — 31 in the UK and three in Canada — saying they had shared confidential information in a private Discord server run by the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain. The IWGB says the dismissals were union-busting. To argue the breach was serious, Rockstar's submissions had to describe what was discussed, which is how a reference to an online player format ended up in a public document. The final hearing opened in Glasgow on September 10, 2026 and is scheduled to run until October 16.
- Will GTA 6 Online be available at launch on November 19, 2026?
- No online mode is described anywhere in Rockstar's official launch materials, which sell the Jason and Lucia story. Take-Two has said GTA Online continues and that a new online component tied to GTA 6 arrives after launch, with no date attached. In August 2026 Bloomberg's Jason Schreier said Rockstar has no plans to talk about GTA 6's online mode anytime soon, and framed that as an observation about the marketing rather than a leak.
Source note: the quoted passage from Rockstar's tribunal submission, and Jennifer Kolbe's "extraordinarily alarming" remark, are reported by GTA BOOM and Game Rant, with additional caveats from Dexerto; outlets render the phrase both as "32 player" and "32-player." Details of the case — 34 dismissals across the UK and Canada, 31 claimants, the Glasgow hearing opening September 10, 2026 and running to October 16 — come from coverage by PC Gamer and The Edinburgh Reporter. GTA Online's 30-players-plus-2-spectators session capacity, and Rockstar's clarification of the Xbox Store's "32 players" wording for Expanded and Enhanced, are documented in Sportskeeda's report on that listing; the original 16-player description of GTA Online comes from Rockstar's 2013 announcement. Jason Schreier's comments were made in a video published August 7, 2026. Rockstar Games has never announced a GTA 6 online mode, a player count, or a release window for one; where this page says "unannounced," that is why. We report that a tribunal document exists and what mainstream outlets quote from it — we do not link to or reproduce leaked builds or stolen material.
