Everything Rockstar has put on screen in the water
Official. Water content in GTA 6 arrived in three separate drops, and keeping them apart is the whole trick to reading this topic honestly.
- December 2023 and May 2025 — the trailers and official site. Rockstar's own GTA VI site gave the Leonida Keys a location page headed "Gateway to Paradise", describing a tropical archipelago where "the dress code is casual, the bars are loaded" and warning that you are "right on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America." The accompanying screenshot set included two divers gliding over a coral reef among fish, an eel and a sea turtle. A separate Grassrivers image showed an airboat carrying gator hunters across the shallows.
- June 2026 — the Ultimate Edition list. When pre-orders opened, Rockstar's own bonus copy named two watercraft: a Crest Kayak and a Shitzu Squalo speedboat docked at Washington Beach with a pink-and-blue gradient livery and a weapons crate. Our Ultimate Edition breakdown has the full list.
- August 27, 2026 — the Extended Look. The 27-minute gameplay showcase ran a free-roam montage that put people in and on the water: swimming in open ocean, scuba diving, paddling a kayak, riding jet skis, and running a fanboat through swamp. This is the drop that mattered, because it converted still images into things a player does.
Everything below that line is inference. Everything above it is footage or Rockstar's own words.
Swimming and the lung-capacity meter
Official footage, plus one credible report. Swimming was never seriously in question — every mainline 3D GTA since San Andreas has let you swim, and GTA V let you dive. The Extended Look confirms it anyway, with open-water swimming in the montage.
The one mechanical detail anybody has is worth stating precisely. Writing up the August preview round, Vice reported that "swimming has a dedicated lung-capacity meter that replaces the stamina bar when entering the water." That is a single sentence from a hands-off preview, not a Rockstar statement, and it does not say whether lung capacity is a stat you improve — though the phrasing invites the comparison to San Andreas, where it was. If it is trainable, it would sit naturally alongside the body and gym simulation the same showcase demonstrated.
Note what this is not. Several pages describe a blue oxygen bar that drains and then costs you health — that is a description of GTA V's HUD, forward-projected. It may well be right. Nobody has shown it.
Diving: a 2025 screenshot that became a 2026 activity
Official. The Leonida Keys diver screenshot is over a year old, and for most of that time the honest reading was that it proved nothing about gameplay. Rockstar publishes location art; a diver in a picture is a diver in a picture. In May 2025, Game Rant said as much explicitly, noting that "Rockstar hasn't confirmed if these swimming features will return in GTA 6" and framing diving as a prediction.
The Extended Look closed that gap. Underwater exploration appears in the free-roam montage as one of roughly twenty activity categories, which is as close to "this is a thing you do" as a marketing video gets without narration. So scuba diving in GTA 6 is confirmed as an activity.
What is not confirmed is every specific that gets attached to it. No Rockstar source has described an oxygen gauge, air tanks, a dive loadout, shipwrecks, underwater caves, salvageable loot, or any collectible under the water. Those claims are common and they are unsourced. The same applies to surfing, which has never appeared in official material at all.
The only two watercraft Rockstar has ever named
Official — and narrower than you would guess. Across three videos, a location-by-location official website and a full pre-order bonus list, Rockstar has attached a name to exactly two GTA 6 watercraft, and both come from the same Ultimate Edition item list:
| Watercraft | What Rockstar said | Where it came from |
|---|---|---|
| Crest Kayak | Bundled with the Dinka Enduro motorcycle as Ultimate Edition content | Official pre-order bonus copy, June 2026 |
| Shitzu Squalo | Speedboat docked at Washington Beach, exclusive pink-and-blue gradient livery, weapons crate | Official pre-order bonus copy, June 2026 |
Everything else on the water is an unnamed craft in official media: the Grassrivers airboat, the seaplane and boat traffic threaded through the Leonida Keys material, and the jet skis, kayaks and fanboats in the montage. Those are all real — they are on screen — but Rockstar has not told us a single manufacturer, model name or spec for any of them. The aircraft situation is almost identical.
The Squalo detail is a nice piece of continuity, incidentally: it is a boat that has appeared in GTA games since Vice City. Its presence is a reasonable hint that other returning water vehicles will show up. A hint is not a roster.
"The most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America"
Official quote, over-read. That line is genuinely Rockstar's, from the Leonida Keys page on the official GTA VI site. It is also the load-bearing evidence under nearly every "sharks confirmed" page on the internet, and it does not carry that weight.
Read in context, it is the closing beat of a paragraph about casual dress, loaded bars and easy living — a tourism pitch with a twist in the tail. The Keys in this game are Jason's home turf and a drug-smuggling coast; "dangerous waters" has an obvious non-zoological reading that the rest of the page supports. It might also mean sharks. Both are guesses.
The verifiable position is simple: no shark appears in any official GTA 6 material released so far. Not in Trailer 1, not in Trailer 2, not in the Extended Look, not in the screenshot sets. Rockstar has never used the word. The marine animals that are visible in official media — the reef fish, eel and sea turtle in the Keys diver shot, a manatee in the background of an Ambrosia image, dolphins in the swimming montage — are documented on our animals, hunting and fishing page, which sorts every species claim by the strength of its evidence.
Where the boat lists and marine-life tables come from
This is the part worth your attention. Search "GTA 6 boats" and you will find complete watercraft databases with stats, classes and top speeds, for a game nobody outside Rockstar has played. Read the vehicle names on them: Jetmax, Speeder, Seashark, Marquis, Tropic, Dinghy. Those are GTA V and GTA Online boats. The pages have taken the GTA Online watercraft class list, assumed it returns, sorted it into categories, and published it under a GTA 6 heading. Some of them then add a stats table.
The marine-life versions work the same way and are more confidently wrong. They list parrotfish and barracuda in the shallow coral, reef sharks on the flats, hammerheads and tigers in deep water offshore, manatees in the river inlets, pods of dolphins alongside boats. Read it cold and it is a competent summary of the fauna of the Florida Keys. It is not reporting about a video game. The one Rockstar image of a reef contains a turtle, an eel and some fish.
Two other claims circulate as fact and deserve naming. First, that scuba diving is required for 100% completion — Rockstar has never published a completion checklist for GTA 6 or said what counts toward it. Second, that diving includes hidden loot in wrecks and caves — an extrapolation from GTA V's underwater collectibles. Both trace to aggregator pages rather than to any source, which is the same failure mode we documented in the "700+ enterable buildings" story.

What nobody knows yet
- Whether water is traversal or decoration. Leonida has an archipelago, wetlands and a long coast, and the montage shows craft suited to each. Whether boats are a real way to cross the map — with fuel, docks and moorings — or a set of activity props is unstated.
- Whether water vehicles can be stored. The Squalo is "docked at Washington Beach", which implies persistent moorings. Nothing says how you acquire a second boat, or whether the car-keeping rules apply to watercraft.
- Whether police pursue you on the water. The six-star wanted system has been demonstrated in detail on land. No boat chase has been shown.
- What diving is for. An activity in a montage is not an objective. Nobody has described a reward, a collectible or a mission attached to going under.
- How deep the map goes. GTA V modelled a full sea floor. Whether Leonida's waters have anything below the reef layer is unknown.
We will update this page if Rockstar publishes water-vehicle detail in the remaining pre-launch marketing, or if a developer is asked about diving on the record. Until then: swim, dive and paddle are confirmed; the stat tables are not.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you swim in GTA 6?
- Yes. Open-water swimming appears in the free-roam montage of Rockstar's official Extended Look, alongside scuba diving, kayaking, jet skis and airboats. Reporting from the August 2026 preview round adds one mechanical detail: Vice reports that swimming has a dedicated lung-capacity meter that replaces the stamina bar when you enter the water. Every mainline 3D GTA since San Andreas has let you swim, so this was never really in doubt — what is new is that Leonida is built around water in a way San Andreas and Los Santos were not.
- Is there scuba diving in GTA 6?
- Yes, and the evidence comes in two stages. In May 2025 Rockstar published an official Leonida Keys screenshot showing two divers over a coral reef among fish, an eel and a sea turtle, under site copy describing the archipelago as sitting on the doorstep of "some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America". At that point diving could still have been scenery. The August 27, 2026 Extended Look settled it by putting underwater exploration in the free-roam activity montage. What remains unconfirmed is everything about how it works: no Rockstar source has described an oxygen gauge, a gear loadout, salvage, shipwrecks or underwater collectibles.
- What boats are confirmed in GTA 6?
- Rockstar has named exactly two watercraft: the Crest Kayak and the Shitzu Squalo, both listed as Ultimate Edition bonus content, with the Squalo docked at Washington Beach carrying a pink-and-blue gradient livery and a weapons crate. Beyond those two names, official material shows unnamed craft: an airboat carrying gator hunters in the Grassrivers screenshot, a seaplane and boat traffic in the Leonida Keys material, and jet skis, kayaks and fanboats in the Extended Look montage. The long alphabetised "GTA 6 boat" lists in search results — Jetmax, Speeder, Seashark, Marquis, Tropic, Dinghy — are GTA V and GTA Online vehicle names. They are reasonable guesses at returning boats, not confirmations.
- Are there sharks in GTA 6?
- Unconfirmed. No shark has appeared in Trailer 1, Trailer 2, the Extended Look, or any official screenshot we can find. The claim is usually supported by Rockstar's own Leonida Keys line about "the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America" — but that is tourism-brochure copy on a location page, and the Keys are also home to the state's drug-running coast, which the same page is describing. Pages listing hammerhead and tiger sharks patrolling deep water, reef sharks in the shallows and manatees in river inlets are writing a Florida field guide, not reporting a game.
- Is scuba diving required for 100% completion in GTA 6?
- There is no source for that. Rockstar has not published a completion checklist for GTA 6, has not said what counts toward 100%, and has not described diving as an objective of any kind. Pages stating that diving is required for completion, or that it yields hidden loot from wrecks and underwater caves, are describing a system nobody has seen. The pattern is familiar: GTA V had underwater collectibles, so the assumption gets forward-projected onto GTA 6 and then printed without the hedge.
Source note: the free-roam activity montage contents — swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, jet skis and fanboats — are as catalogued from Rockstar's official Extended Look by Shacknews and GTA BOOM. The lung-capacity meter is reported by Vice (September 5, 2026) from the hands-off preview round. Rockstar's Leonida Keys description and the official diver screenshot are quoted as reported by Game Rant in May 2025, which framed diving as a prediction at the time. Crest Kayak and Shitzu Squalo details come from Rockstar's own Ultimate Edition bonus copy, covered in full on our Ultimate Edition page. Every preview in the August round was hands-off; nobody outside Rockstar has played GTA 6, and no stat, speed or handling figure exists for any GTA 6 watercraft.
