Fishing is catch-and-release, and Rockstar said so on purpose
Credible report. This is the most concrete thing anyone outside Rockstar knows about GTA 6 wildlife, and it is the detail most often reported without its qualifier.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson described fishing in an interview with the YouTube channel TGG, covered by GameSpot and others in early September 2026. Two things came out of it. First, the mechanics are deep — Nelson compared them directly to Red Dead Redemption 2, which means bait, casting, reeling and wearing a fish down rather than a one-button minigame. Second, and this is the part that surprised people: you release every fish you catch. You cannot keep them, carry them, eat them or sell them. Asked why, Nelson said it "didn't fit this game."
That answer makes sense once you hold the two games side by side. In Red Dead 2 fishing fed a camp and a survival loop. Jason and Lucia are not surviving; they are running a crime spree through a modern state where robbing a register pays better than a day on the water ever could. Nelson's framing is that fishing exists for its own sake, tied into challenges and collectibles rather than into the economy.
So fishing is not decorative — there is progression attached — but it is not income. If you have seen a page promising fish markets, trophy walls or a fishmonger in Port Gellhorn, none of that has any source behind it.
Hunting is the one that pays
Credible report. In the same TGG interview, Nelson drew the opposite line on hunting: it is a way to make money.
He also described how you get into it, which is the more interesting structural detail. Hunting is unlocked through a friend of Jason — a character TGG noted has not appeared in any released GTA 6 footage. That matches the pattern the Extended Look established across the board: activities in this game tend to arrive attached to a person rather than as an icon that appears on your map at a fixed point. It is the same reasoning behind the gym you have to buy into and the fences you have to know.
Both hunting and fishing share an inspect action lifted from Red Dead 2, which lets you examine a creature rather than only shoot or catch it. Beyond that, almost nothing has been described. Nobody has said what you hunt with, whether pelts or meat exist as carried items, whether animals are tracked or simply encountered, or which species are legal targets.
The zoo and the study checklist
Credible report. One of the odder reveals from the press demo: Leonida has a zoo you can explore, and studying an animal there crosses it off a list.
Outlets summarising IGN's hands-off session described the checklist as working the way Red Dead Redemption 2's compendium did — observe a creature, and a record fills in over the course of a playthrough — and reported that it applies to wild animals as well as to the zoo's residents. That turns Leonida's wildlife into a soft collectible layer rather than scenery, which is a meaningfully different design goal from GTA 5, where animals existed mostly as flavour and the occasional Peyote hallucination.
Worth keeping straight: this is a report from journalists who watched a developer play, not a Rockstar statement. Rockstar has never mentioned a zoo in a trailer, a caption or a Newswire post, and no zoo location has been named or placed on the map. The checklist is credible. A dedicated compendium app on your phone is not — no preview has described one, and our phone and apps breakdown covers which apps actually have evidence behind them.
Dogs: scold, pet, study
Official. The clearest animal interaction in any Rockstar-published footage is a dog. In Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, Jason approaches one and a hold-to-interact menu opens with three options: Scold, Pet and Study. He pets it, and an icon flashes on the HUD.
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look — the official presentation on Rockstar Games' YouTube channel, following its Netflix premiere on August 27, 2026.
Analysis. That third option is the one that matters, because it is the same Study verb the zoo checklist runs on. It means the compendium is not a separate zoo activity bolted on the side — it is part of the general animal interaction menu, available on a stray dog on a Vice City street. The HUD icon suggests something is being tracked in the background, which several outlets read as a hidden stat. Which stat, and what it does, has not been stated by anyone at Rockstar — and note that recaps of the showcase disagree on which shoulder button opens the menu, so do not take the control scheme as settled. Reports from the press demo also mention buying treats for dogs.
Whether petting a dog nudges the Criminal Profile the way antagonising an NPC does is an obvious question and a completely open one.
Swimming, scuba and the lung meter
Credible report. Wildlife in a state that is mostly water means the swimming systems matter here too. Analysts reading the Extended Look HUD frame by frame describe a lung-capacity meter that replaces the stamina bar the moment you enter the water, with a separate oxygen gauge appearing while scuba diving.
If lung capacity behaves like the other meters in this game, it is a stat that improves with use — which would put it alongside the weight and gym system in a wider character-conditioning layer. That is inference, not confirmation; nobody at Rockstar has described lung capacity as a progression stat. What is on screen is the meter itself.
Swimming, scuba, kayaking, jet skis and fanboats all appear in the Extended Look montage, and the Leonida Keys and the Grassrivers wetlands are built for exactly that. Our side activities catalogue sorts the full montage by what is genuinely playable versus what you only watch.
Which animals are actually in official material
Official media, with a caveat. Rockstar has published three GTA 6 videos and a set of screenshots. Animals appear throughout them. What Rockstar has never done is name a species, publish a list, or confirm that any creature on screen is huntable, catchable or interactive.
Here is the honest split, with the evidence attached to each tier rather than to a single "confirmed" label.
| Tier | Examples | What actually backs it |
|---|---|---|
| Unambiguous in official media | Alligators, flamingos, dogs | Gators recur across trailer footage and the official cover-art collage; Grassrivers is an Everglades region built around them. Flamingos open Trailer 1 and the cover art includes a flamingo boat. Dogs are shown as an interactive system in the Extended Look. |
| In official footage, identified by press analysis | Dolphins, pelicans, manatees, deer, iguana, sea turtle, panther, shark | Visible in Rockstar footage, but the species names come from journalists and fans freeze-framing shots — a pod in a yacht scene, a shape in the shallows. Reasonable identifications. Not Rockstar's words. |
| From the September 2022 leak | Cows, whales, rats, frogs, possums, skunks, pigeons | An unauthorized leak of a build that is now four years old. We do not treat leaked material as confirmation of anything in the shipping game — see our rumor policy. |
| Speculation | Bears, horses, chickens, eagles | Native to Florida, or present in earlier Rockstar games. No GTA 6 evidence at all. |
The second tier is where most of the value is, and it deserves better treatment than it usually gets. A manatee in the background of an Ambrosia shot is real evidence that manatees are modelled in this game. It is not evidence that you can study one, hunt one, or that it is called a manatee in-game rather than something Rockstar made up. Both statements can be true at once.
Why the big "confirmed animals" lists do not hold up
Analysis. Search "GTA 6 animals" and the top results give you a table of thirty to forty species under a heading that says confirmed. One of the larger ones runs to roughly 35 entries and, to its credit, does say up front that its sources are "the official trailers, the official screenshots, or the 2022 leaks" — and separately flags eight species as leak-only.
That is more honest than most. It is also exactly the problem: by the time those species are rendered into one alphabetised table, the distinction has evaporated. A reader scanning for "is there a shark in GTA 6" sees a row, not a footnote. And a leak from September 2022 documents a development build from a game that was still four years and at least two delays from release — plenty in that build has already changed.
An animal being modelled in a 2022 build is not a promise that it ships in 2026, and a species name invented by a fan freeze-framing a trailer is not Rockstar's name for it.
— the two collapses that produce a 35-item "confirmed" list
This is the same failure pattern we traced through the "every confirmed weapon" lists and the radio station lineups. When demand is enormous and official information is thin, confident tables fill the gap, and their confidence is the least reliable thing about them.
What is still unknown
- Which species you can hunt. Not one has been named. Whether alligators — the animal most associated with the setting — are a target or a hazard is unstated.
- How hunting pays. Nelson said it makes money. Whether that means selling to a buyer, a fence, or a contract system has not been described. Our money and robberies breakdown covers the income routes that have been shown.
- Who Jason's hunting friend is. An unshown character, which is unusual this close to launch.
- Where the zoo is. No location, name or region has been attached to it.
- Whether the checklist has a reward. RDR2's compendium fed crafting and challenges. GTA 6's has been described as a checklist and nothing more.
- Whether animals can be pets. You can pet a dog and reportedly buy it treats. Owning one, or keeping it at a safehouse, has never been shown.
- Whether wildlife is dangerous. No animal attack appears in any official footage. Given a map with gators and sharks in it, that is a conspicuous gap rather than an answer.
We will update this page when Rockstar names a species, shows a hunt, or puts the zoo on a map. Until then, the accurate summary is short: two real activities with one clear design difference between them, a checklist layer over the whole state, and a species list nobody outside Rockstar has actually seen. Every official video is catalogued on our trailer timeline, and the Leonida map guide covers the regions all of this takes place in.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you hunt in GTA 6?
- Yes. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson described hunting in an interview with the YouTube channel TGG published in early September 2026, and it is the more mechanically substantial of the two wildlife activities. Hunting is a way to make money, and it is unlocked through a friend of Jason rather than appearing as a free-standing map icon, which is how Rockstar has framed several GTA 6 activities. Both hunting and fishing use an inspect action carried over from Red Dead Redemption 2. What has not been described is the weapon set, whether pelts or meat are carried as physical items, how animals are tracked, or which species are huntable.
- Can you keep the fish you catch in GTA 6?
- No. Fishing in GTA 6 is catch-and-release. Rob Nelson said the mechanics are as detailed as Red Dead Redemption 2's — bait, casting, reeling, tiring the fish out — but that every fish goes back in the water, and that being able to keep them simply "didn't fit this game." Fishing still connects to challenges and collectibles, so it is not purely decorative, but it is not an income source or an inventory system the way it was in Red Dead 2. That is the single biggest difference between the two games' wildlife systems, and it is also why hunting and fishing should not be lumped together.
- Is there a zoo in GTA 6?
- Yes, according to press previews of the hands-off Rockstar North demo. Outlets summarising IGN's session reported an explorable zoo in Leonida where studying an animal crosses it off a checklist, in the same way Red Dead Redemption 2's compendium filled in as you observed wildlife. The checklist reportedly applies in the wild as well as at the zoo. This is a credible report rather than something Rockstar has stated on the record — the studio has never mentioned a zoo in a trailer, a screenshot caption or a Newswire post, and no zoo location has been named or shown.
- How many animals are in GTA 6?
- Nobody knows, and any page giving you a number is combining incompatible sources. Rockstar has never published a species list. The lists circulating with 30 to 40 "confirmed" animals mix three very different things: creatures genuinely visible in official trailers and screenshots, creatures that appeared in the unauthorized September 2022 leak of a years-old build, and creatures that are simply native to Florida or present in earlier GTA games. Only the first group counts as evidence about the shipping game, and even inside it, most fine-grained species identifications are press and fan frame analysis rather than anything Rockstar labelled.
- Can you pet the dog in GTA 6?
- Yes. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look shows Jason approaching a dog and opening a hold-to-interact menu with three options — Scold, Pet and Study. He pets it, and an icon appears on the HUD, which outlets reading the footage take as a background statistic responding to the interaction. Coverage of the showcase disagrees on which button opens the menu, so treat the specific control as unsettled. Reports from the press demo also describe buying treats for dogs, and the same Study option is what connects animals to the checklist system.
Source note: Rob Nelson's comments on catch-and-release fishing, hunting as a money-maker, the friend-of-Jason unlock and the shared inspect action come from his interview with the YouTube channel TGG, reported by GameSpot on September 3, 2026 and corroborated by GameRant and Notebookcheck. The explorable zoo, the study-an-animal checklist and the dog treats trace to press previews of the July 2026 hands-off Rockstar North demo, summarised from IGN's session by GamingBolt and Shacknews. The Scold/Pet/Study menu and the HUD icon are described in Postmode's shot-by-shot read of the Extended Look; recaps differ on the button used, which is why we do not state one. The lung-capacity meter replacing the stamina bar is reported by Vice. The 35-species "confirmed animals" list, and its own disclosure that its sources include the 2022 leaks, is at GTABase. The Grassrivers airboat image is official Grand Theft Auto VI media from Rockstar Games, used here as editorial context. Rockstar Games has never published a GTA 6 animal list or named a species; where this page says "unconfirmed," that is why. We do not use leaked build footage — see our rumor policy.
