GTA 6's relationship system runs on time together. Exploring, dates like mini golf or kayaking, quick replies to texts and even robbing stores as a pair build Jason and Lucia's bond. The romance is optional and can fade if you neglect it, but Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, told IGN they'll stay partners in crime, and that how you nurture the relationship will have a bearing on how their story plays out.
How the relationship system works in GTA 6
Official When IGN asked about a reputation system, Nelson explained that GTA 6 has two separate ones: the Criminal Profile, which tracks what kind of criminal you are, and a relationship system for Jason and Lucia. You manage the relationship the way you'd hopefully nurture any relationship, he says: by spending time together, however you like to spend it.
Official Game Informer's cover story frames the result: story and optional choices decide whether the pair stay friends or become a romantic couple, and either way they always have each other's backs. Nelson's IGN interview adds the part that matters most: the bond needs upkeep.
How to build Jason and Lucia's relationship
Nelson says almost anything you do together counts as quality time. Here's everything named so far:
| Activity | Source |
|---|---|
| Exploring the open world together, walking around, walks on the beach | Nelson to IGN |
| Pool, mini golf, kayaking | Nelson to IGN |
| The zoo and studying animals | Nelson to IGN |
| Scuba diving and parachuting | Nelson to IGN |
| Holding hands (hold R2) | Nelson to IGN |
| Robbing stores and banks together | Nelson to IGN; Game Informer |
| Calling, answering calls and texts promptly, accepting invitations | Game Informer |
| Holding and opening doors for each other | Nelson to IGN; Game Informer |
Official They can do everyday things together too: shop for clothes, visit a hair salon and hit the gym, where bringing both means they both work out, which Nelson calls a 2-for-1 on their stats. More on all of that in our guide to what you can do in GTA 6 between missions.

Texts, calls and your partner's own routine
Official You can text or call the other character at any time. In the demo, Lucia texted back: "Sweet, I'll come to you."
Official Spend a whole day out as one of them and the other will check in, saying they're going to bed and asking if you're OK. A quick "see you later" or "goodnight" is enough. If you don't bother to reply at all, Nelson says, it may impact your relationship a bit.
Official The partner you're not playing has a routine of their own. Switch over and they might be at the safehouse or out doing their own thing; mid-demo, Nelson switched to Jason and found him in the shower. That changes how the game feels, he says: unlike GTA 5's three characters living separate lives, you spawn in wondering where the other one is, the way you generally know where your partner is in real life. Nelson's own habit is to keep them together unless they're fleeing the cops or rushing somewhere.
Can Jason and Lucia break up?
Official Rockstar starts Jason and Lucia off wanting to give it a shot. But just going through the story and playing missions together may not be enough to keep them together, Nelson says: you'll have to spend time with them in the open world too.
When IGN asked what happens if you don't, he said the story is structured so their circumstances require them to stay together and work together for most of it:
At the very least, they will get through most things as partners in crime.
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to IGN
He wouldn't go further, to avoid spoilers. Official Game Informer's version is that you can't break them up, only decide whether they're friends or a couple. Reported Notebookcheck reports, from a translation of creator Mike ShowSha's video, that Nelson told the creator the pair can stop being a romantic couple and still work as partners in crime.
Our read: the partnership is fixed, the romance isn't. Rockstar hasn't shown a relationship meter or said exactly how a romance ends.

Is the romance in GTA 6 optional?
Yes. Official Nelson says Rockstar wanted to bring emotional resonance to GTA for people who want to engage with it, and also give people a way to opt out. It's not something Rockstar wants to foist on players. Asked whether there's a gameplay benefit big enough to force a romantic playthrough, he said there's no particular gameplay benefit he can think of. They remain partners in crime and always have each other's backs.
Official What it does change is the story. Whether you've nurtured the relationship or not will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out, Nelson says. When you bring them together, it feels like being a steward of their relationship, protective of them as a unit.
Official On physical intimacy, Nelson says it's a huge part of a relationship and has to be done right, so Rockstar keeps iterating until it feels right and wants to avoid a weird caricature. When IGN joked that there are some mini games nobody wants to see, he laughed and agreed. His bottom line for players who don't care about the romance:
Don't bother with it if you aren't. Up to you.
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to IGN
Partners in crime: fights, chases and getting Busted
Official The relationship doesn't change whether they back each other up. If Jason gets into a fight, Lucia definitely joins in, Nelson says. You can switch to the passenger seat and let your partner drive, and the partner drives well enough to get you away from the cops while you shoot from behind. When IGN noted that Lucia is very good at running in heels, Nelson added that she fights in them too.
Official Being a couple matters to the police, too. Officers know when they're chasing a pair, and splitting Jason and Lucia up lowers their perception of you; Nelson says telling Lucia to take off would have drawn some heat away. Official But if either one is arrested, it's Busted, and Game Informer says that applies even if the other escapes. The full rules are in our GTA 6 wanted system guide.
Why Rockstar built GTA 6 around a couple
Official After GTA 5's 3 leads, Rockstar talked about going further: was it four characters now? It worried that would dilute your time with each character and your connection to them, so it chose two characters in a relationship instead. Then the question became how to make players love them both. Chemistry is notoriously hard in any kind of entertainment, Nelson says, and based on the team's reactions, he thinks they've got it.
Official Rockstar worked out the pair's backstory in detail: how they met, how long they've spent together, how well they know each other. Some of it is said outright, some only hinted, and some is left open so players can connect with them. Official Asked about Lucia's ankle tag from the trailer, Nelson said only that it's part of the narrative and part of the way the story brings Jason and Lucia together.
Our GTA 6 characters guide covers who they are, and how the relationship sits next to the Criminal Profile is in our Criminal Profile explainer.

Our take: a GTA you can play as a love story, or not
Our read: this is the most unusual thing in GTA 6. Rockstar is asking players to care about a relationship, then giving them the option not to, and letting that choice shape the story. Making romance optional but consequential avoids the usual trap of companion characters you're told to love.
The open questions: how visible the relationship state is, and how much the story actually diverges. Nelson hopes players are ready for it. For the rest of what he showed, read our full IGN interview breakdown.
