How the planner works

The planner does four sums for you. Each one uses only the numbers in the box above, and every number carries a label: Official means Rockstar Games, Sony or Microsoft said it, Reported means a named outlet reported it and it hasn't been confirmed.

  • Will it fit? It compares your free space with the download size, then checks you'll still have about 30 GB spare for a day-one patch. No patch size has been announced; 30 GB is our own safety margin.
  • How long will it take? Download size divided by your internet speed gives the best case. Real downloads rarely run at full plan speed, so we also show a more typical figure at 70% of it. That 70% is our estimate, not a measurement.
  • When does pre-load open? Official Pre-load starts on November 12, 2026. Reported It opens at midnight local time in each region, starting in New Zealand, according to Sportskeeda's regional list. The planner turns that into your own clock.
  • When does it unlock? Official GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. Reported PlayStation Store listings point to midnight local time, except in the US, where every time zone is reported to unlock at once at midnight Eastern. How to check your free space

  • PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro: go to Settings > Storage. Console storage shows how much space is free.
  • Xbox Series X and Series S: go to Settings > System > Storage devices and select the internal drive.

Type the free space figure into the planner as it appears on screen. If it says TB, multiply by 1,000 (1.2 TB is 1,200 GB).

How to make room for GTA 6

Reported At 210 GB, GTA 6 on PS5 would fill about a quarter of an empty PS5 Slim and nearly a third of an empty launch-model PS5. Here's how to clear space without losing anything:

  • Move games instead of deleting them. Official On PS5 you can move PS5 games to a USB drive formatted as extended storage, but you can't play them from there: copy them back to the console when you want to play, which is much faster than downloading them again (PlayStation Support).
  • Add internal storage. Official Every PS5 model can take an M.2 SSD, and PS5 games can be downloaded to it and played from it (PlayStation Support). Reported On Xbox Series X|S, games built for those consoles only run from the internal drive or a Storage Expansion Card; a USB hard drive can store them but not run them (TechRadar).
  • Clear captures and old apps. Video clips, screenshots and streaming apps add up. Check your capture gallery before deleting a game you still play.
  • Delete games you've finished. Your saves are kept on the console (and in cloud storage if you use it), so you can reinstall later and carry on.

Pre-load: what it is and who gets it

Official Digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can pre-load GTA 6 from November 12, 2026. The boxed Standard Edition contains a download code rather than a disc, and it goes on sale the same day, so boxed buyers pre-load too. That also means a disc drive makes no difference: every player downloads the whole game, which is why free space matters for everyone.

Pre-loading downloads and installs the game a week early, but it stays locked until your region's unlock time on November 19. It doesn't let anyone play early. Our editions guide explains what the Standard and Ultimate Editions include, and no edition unlocks sooner.

Why your download may be slower than the planner says

  • Mbps and MB/s are different. Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps). Download screens often show megabytes per second (MB/s), which is 8 times smaller. Pick the right unit in the planner.
  • Wi-Fi costs speed. A network cable to the console usually gets closer to your plan speed, especially through walls.
  • Everyone downloads at once. Millions of players will start on November 12 and again on launch night, and store servers can slow down. Starting early in the pre-load week is the safest plan.
  • Let it download while you sleep. Downloads can continue in rest mode on PS5 and with the console asleep on Xbox, if the power settings allow it.

Plan for a day-one patch too. Big launches usually get one, and its size won't be known until launch week. That's why the planner keeps 30 GB spare.

FAQ

How big is GTA 6 on PS5?

GTA 6 is reported to be a 210 GB download on PS5, from PlayStation Store data shared by the PlayStation Game Size account on October 27, 2026. Rockstar and Sony haven't confirmed it, and a day-one patch could add more. The planner updates as soon as an official figure appears.

How big is GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S?

The Xbox size hasn't been announced yet. It's expected around November 12, when Xbox pre-loads open. Until then, the planner uses the reported PS5 size as a rough guide and says so.

Will GTA 6 fit on a 512 GB Xbox Series S?

The 512 GB Series S has about 364 GB of usable space, so a download the size of the PS5 version (210 GB) would fit on an empty console but take well over half of it. Most owners will need to delete or move other games first, or add a Storage Expansion Card.

How long will GTA 6 take to download?

At 100 Mbps, a 210 GB download takes about 4 hours 40 minutes at full speed, and closer to 6 hours 40 minutes at a more typical 70% of that speed. At 50 Mbps it's roughly double. Put your own speed into the planner above for your time.

When can I pre-load GTA 6?

Pre-load opens on November 12, 2026, for digital pre-orders and the boxed Standard Edition's download code on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It's reported to open at midnight local time, starting in New Zealand. The game unlocks on November 19.

Do I need to download GTA 6 if I buy it on disc?

Yes. The boxed Standard Edition comes with a download code instead of a game disc, so physical buyers download the full game like everyone else. You can redeem the code and pre-load from November 12.
