GTA 6 Wanted System Explained: Heat, Stars and Losing the Cops

Rockstar North's Rob Nelson explained GTA 6's police while playing it live for IGN, and got swarmed in the process. Here's how wanted levels and heat work, and every escape trick he named.

The GTA 6 wanted system starts with a witness: police only learn about a crime if someone sees it or an alarm goes off. From there, a heat system tracks what they know about you, from your face and outfit to your car and the fact that you're a couple, and losing the cops means breaking that picture. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, explained it all to IGN while playing the game live.

How the GTA 6 wanted system works: witnesses, alarms and dispatch

Official In GTA 6, the police don't simply know. Nelson told IGN that someone has to witness a crime, or an alarm has to go off, before it's reported to the law. Reported Famitsu's interview with Nelson, in an English fan translation, makes the same point: no witness, no report.

Once a call comes in, Nelson says, dispatch is "extremely specific in what it knows."

His demo showed the whole chain. Reported IGN describes a run-in with strangers that drew in a second group, and one of them pulled a gun. Official Nelson defused it by aiming his own weapon, and the group scattered; otherwise, he says, it would have become a fistfight. Nobody died, and the people knocked down got up and walked away, but someone called it in. That earned one star, which he called not really a big deal: get out of the area the police are responding to and you should be fine.

Official Stars still matter. Rockstar told Game Informer that 6-star wanted levels return, with heat working on top of them (see our Game Informer cover story breakdown).

Wanted level icons: stars, hot areas and hollow white stars

GTA 6 shows you what the police know. These are the signals Nelson pointed out during the demo:

What you seeWhat it means
A hot area on the mapCops linger where the crime happened. Go back and you still have a star in that zone
Hollow white starsPolice are responding, but they don't know who you are
Icons for your car, or for a couplePolice know what you're driving, or that they're after two people
A blinking red light at the bottom of the screenThe car you stole has an advanced tracker
A yellow X over a personThat person is incapacitated and won't get back up

Official The hot area is a memory of the crime: hovering over it on his map, Nelson still had one star there, with police hanging around for a while.

Official Hollow white stars appeared after a car theft: officers were heading to the place the car was taken, but didn't know what Jason and Lucia looked like. Leaving the area was enough. The tracker light gets its own section in our guide to stealing cars in GTA 6.

What is the heat system in GTA 6?

Heat is Rockstar's word for what the police know about you once they've seen you. Official Nelson says they know what you look like and what you're wearing. Official Game Informer describes the same system from the other side: officers build a picture of your appearance and whereabouts from reported incidents.

That makes quick disguises weak. In the demo, Nelson put on a pair of glasses and a baseball cap, then pointed out that the police still knew his clothes. A new haircut changes your appearance too, he said, but if you're standing out in the open, the outfit still gives you away.

Reported IGN's full transcript has Lucia lying low in a mini mart, buying a cap and some gum while a police officer walks past outside without noticing. IGN's August write-up of the same demo credits Jason with that purchase, so who bought the cap is unclear.

How to lose heat and the cops in GTA 6

Nelson named almost every escape trick while he played, sometimes while admitting he wasn't using them:

  1. Hit and run. Commit a crime, move on before the cops get there and don't start shooting. Rockstar is actively encouraging this style, and Nelson says that if you don't escalate, you'll generally be fine.
  2. Leave the hot area and let it die down. Stay off the streets for a while instead of driving back through the scene.
  3. Change your outfit. Buy and wear a new one at a clothing store, or grab a spare from the trunk of your personal vehicle, which can carry changes of clothes.
  4. Swap cars. Police know what you're driving. Jump out, get into a vehicle they haven't seen, and their perception of you drops.
  5. Split up. Police know they're chasing a couple. Separating Jason and Lucia lowers their perception too, and Nelson says simply telling Lucia to take off would have drawn some heat away.
  6. Go on foot. At 3 stars in the city, a car can sometimes struggle to get you clear unless it's very fast or a sports bike. His advice: get off the streets and into the alleys, jumping and climbing fences as you go.

Nelson was most definite about the outfit change. Shopping in the fashion district with Jason and Lucia, Nelson spelled it out:

Purchasing and wearing a new outfit will remove any heat that I have.

Fighting back: escalation, incapacitation and Adrenaline

You don't have to run. Official Nelson says you can stay and fight the police if you want. In the demo he left one person incapacitated, marked with a yellow X, and that pushed his heat up.

Official Mid-chase, he also mentioned that he now had Adrenaline, which was helping him get away. He didn't explain what it does.

Official With civilians, you get softer options: threaten someone until they back down, knock them out, or shoot to incapacitate instead of kill. Reported Famitsu's translated interview adds suppressive fire as a way to escape without killing. How those choices shape the way the world sees you is in our Criminal Profile explainer.

The demo showed how fast it can go wrong. When police turned up by bad luck, Nelson listed the smart moves (wait it out, change outfits, split up), skipped all of them, was swarmed and called himself "a total idiot."

Busted, Wasted and jail in GTA 6

Official If either Jason or Lucia is arrested, Nelson says it's simply Busted, then a restart and respawn, as in previous games. Official Game Informer adds that you get the Busted screen even if the other one got away, so splitting up is a gamble as well as a tactic.

Reported The July demo didn't end in an arrest. IGN's August interview says Nelson was Wasted instead, after a car sideswiped him as he fled.

Reported Famitsu's fan-translated interview says GTA 6 keeps cash separate from a bank account, and that you lose the cash you're carrying when you're Wasted or Busted. Our robberies and money guide covers what that means for a big score.

Nothing in these interviews describes jail time for the player: getting caught works the way it always has.

Our take: GTA's police finally play fair

Our read: this is the biggest change to GTA's police in years. Cops who only know what witnesses and alarms tell them reward planning: a spare outfit in the trunk, a second car, a partner who can peel off. Nelson ties it to the story, too: this is a couple on the run who shouldn't draw unnecessary attention.

The risk is friction. If every robbery ends with a trip to a clothing store, heat becomes a chore; spare outfits in the trunk suggest Rockstar knows it. Still unknown: how long heat lasts and how 4 to 6 stars play. We'll find out on November 19, 2026; our release date guide has the details, and the full IGN interview breakdown covers everything else Nelson showed.

FAQ

How does the wanted system work in GTA 6?

A crime is only reported if someone witnesses it or an alarm goes off. Police respond with stars as before, while heat tracks what they know about your looks, outfit and car.

What is the heat system in GTA 6?

Heat is what the police know about you once they've seen you: your looks and your outfit. Rob Nelson says a new outfit removes it, while a hat, glasses or haircut alone isn't enough.

What do hollow stars mean in GTA 6?

Hollow white stars mean police are responding to a crime but don't know who you are. In IGN's demo they appeared after a car theft, and leaving the area was enough to get away.

How do you lose the cops in GTA 6?

Leave before they arrive, let the area cool down, change your outfit, swap cars or split Jason and Lucia up. At 3 stars in the city, escape on foot through the alleys.

Can you go to jail in GTA 6?

Rockstar hasn't described a jail system. Nelson says that if either character is arrested, it's Busted and a respawn, as in previous GTA games, and Game Informer says you're Busted even if the other one escapes.

How many wanted stars does GTA 6 have?

Up to 6. Rockstar told Game Informer that 6-star wanted levels return, with the new heat system working on top of them.
