GTA 6 Missions: What Rockstar Has Actually Described

No mission in GTA 6 has a name yet. But Rockstar has been unusually specific about how missions are built — who you control, how many ways out there are, and why you cannot just run the story back to back.

Quick answer: Rockstar has never published a GTA 6 mission name, a mission count, or a mission list — not in either trailer, not in the Extended Look, not on the official site. What it has described on the record is how missions are built: a campaign that moves chapter by chapter, character switching that some missions deliberately lock, jobs that let you pick whether you drive or shoot while the other protagonist takes the opposite seat, buildings with more than one way out, and robberies that exist as fixed missions and as free-roam activities. Every numbered "all GTA 6 missions in order" list is describing trailer scenes or extrapolating from GTA 5.

No GTA 6 mission has a name yet

Official. Across Trailer 1, Trailer 2, the 26-minute Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, the official screenshot gallery and every Newswire post, Rockstar Games has never put a mission title on screen or in writing. There is no count, no act breakdown, no list.

That is entirely normal. Rockstar did not publish a GTA 5 mission list before release either — the complete one was assembled by players afterwards. But it does mean that any page offering you "every story mission in order" two months before launch is doing something other than reporting, and it is worth knowing which something.

The carefully built databases admit this outright. GTABase's GTA 6 missions page carries a single entry, Prologue, under a "Mission List coming soon" note, and says it will be "continuously updated with a complete list of GTA 6 story missions, presented in chronological order" as information becomes available. That is a placeholder behaving honestly.

Chapters, and hideouts that move

Credible report. The clearest description of GTA 6's campaign structure comes from an interview Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson gave to the Japanese magazine Famitsu during the Extended Look press round, translated in full by GTAVice.net. Asked how much the world changes as you play, Nelson answered: "The story progresses chapter by chapter, and the characters' hideouts also change as it progresses."

That is the Red Dead Redemption 2 model — a camp that relocates between chapters — mapped onto GTA's property system. It also means safehouses are tied to story progress rather than being a purely open-world purchase, and it lines up with what preview attendees reported about the map opening up: the world "expands significantly after completing the initial opening missions," per GTABase's roundup of the previews. There is a gated opening, then the state unlocks.

Nelson has separately said his own playthrough of main and optional content ran roughly 80 hours. We have gone through what that figure does and does not tell you on the GTA 6 story length page; the short version is that it is one developer's run, not a mission count.

When a mission takes the switch away

This is the point most preview recaps get wrong, and it is easy to check. Several of them state flatly that "as in GTA 5, you can switch between Jason and Lucia at any time, during open-world gameplay and story missions." Nelson told Famitsu something more interesting.

Asked directly whether there are restrictions on switching, he said: "There are times when it's restricted depending on the progression of the story... There's a mission where you have to make your way through a high-rise housing complex. Previously, we allowed players to switch freely, but we decided that it felt more natural to control Jason, who is former special forces, in order to get through that situation, so we locked the character."

Two things are worth pulling out of that. First, the lock is a late design change — Rockstar had free switching working in that mission and took it away on purpose. Second, the justification is characterisation, not difficulty: Jason's military background is why he leads. Nelson framed the split plainly elsewhere in the same interview, saying there are missions designed to be locked "while others allow you to alternate between controlling Jason and Lucia."

So the honest answer to "can you switch during missions" is: usually yes, sometimes no, and the exceptions are story-driven. Our character switching guide covers how the switch works in free roam, where no such restriction has been described.

Drive or shoot: the role choice

Credible report. The single most concrete mission-design detail from the closed-door Rockstar North demo is that some missions let you pick your seat. Journalists in the room described missions "where the player could choose whether to drive or let the other protagonist handle the vehicle while they concentrated on shooting" — the same job, two different jobs to do in it.

The Extended Look shows the shape of this without making it a choice: at one point Lucia drives while Jason and Raul Bautista fire at pursuing police, before the crew dumps the car for a backup vehicle. That is the two-seat structure the previews say you get to pick a side of, and it connects directly to the in-car combat and focus meter shown elsewhere in the presentation.

More than one way out of a building

Credible report. Vice's compilation of the previews reports that many missions give "greater freedom when deciding how to complete an objective or make their getaway," citing a sequence inside a high-rise building that featured several possible ways to escape. It also reports a small but telling assist: some police pursuits will point you toward the most effective getaway path, and you are free to ignore it and find your own.

GTABase's roundup puts the design goal the same way — missions are meant to be "less restrictive compared to GTA V and RDR2." Rockstar's stated reason, per the previews, is replayability: it believes the different narrative possibilities give players a reason to run the campaign more than once. That is a claim about intent, not a measured feature, and nobody outside Rockstar has played the game to test it.

Analysis. What none of this tells you is how wide the branches are. "Several ways to escape a building" could mean three exit doors or three genuinely different escape sequences. Preview attendees watched; they did not play. Treat the direction as reported and the magnitude as unknown.

Robberies are missions and free roam at once

Credible report. Famitsu asked Nelson about the gas-station store robbery in the showcase — fixed mission, or free-form activity? His answer was "Both. You can rob it alone. Or you can invite Lucia and have her come along."

That is a real structural change, and it is why the boundary between GTA 6's side content and its campaign is deliberately blurry. The same robbery has a mission version and a you-decided-to-do-this version, and the second one can include your partner. Inside either, the previews describe a speed-versus-profit trade: blow a safe open quickly and damage some of what is inside, or take longer finding the combination and walk out with more while police response builds. Officers may already be waiting outside, which is what makes those rear exits matter.

Full detail on the robbery tiers, duffel bags and fences is on our money and robberies page, and the larger scores — the ones Rockstar calls "scores" rather than heists — are covered on the heists page.

Missions you have to be able to afford

Credible report. The most consequential thing Nelson said about mission progression has nothing to do with mission design: "Simply completing missions won't give you enough money to progress the story. By earning money in the open world, you'll be able to advance the story."

Outlets who attended the previews described the mechanic as certain story missions requiring a minimum amount of cash before they unlock. Headlines turned that into GTA 6 "locking you out" of the story if you are broke, which overstates it in one direction — the described mechanic is a threshold you raise by playing, not a fail state. But it is still a genuine break from GTA 5, where mission payouts funded the campaign by themselves.

Rockstar has not published how many of these gates exist, where they fall, or what the numbers are. Anyone quoting an amount is guessing.

The two jobs the Extended Look showed

Official footage. The showcase contains two sequences long enough to read as missions rather than montage. Neither is named on screen, and what follows is a description of what the published video shows rather than anything Rockstar has written down.

Two cautions. The Extended Look is a curated presentation, not the campaign in order — the fact that the drug pickup opens the video does not make it the opening mission, and Rockstar never said it was. And while it is tempting to match Nelson's "high-rise housing complex" example to the Megamundo tower, he describes a residential building and Megamundo is a corporate headquarters. They may be the same sequence or two different ones; we are not going to assert either.

Replay, medals, difficulty: nothing said

Here is the honest state of everything else people search for, as of today:

QuestionStatus
How many story missionsUnknown. No count from Rockstar, no count from any preview attendee.
Mission names / titlesUnknown. None published in any official material.
Mission replay or mission selectNot reported. No preview attendee described one.
Gold medals or mission challengesNot reported. A GTA 5 and RDR2 feature, assumed forward by fan sites.
Checkpoints and retry-on-failureNot reported. Present in every recent Rockstar game; still not confirmed here.
Difficulty settingsNot reported. Rockstar has said nothing about difficulty options.
Mission payoutsPartially addressed. Nelson says mission money alone will not carry the story; no figures exist.

One caution that cuts the other way, and it is the same one we applied to stealth and cheat codes: the absence of a replay menu from a 26-minute marketing video is not evidence that mission replay was cut. Both GTA 5 and RDR2 shipped with it, and neither advertised it beforehand. "Not confirmed" means not confirmed, in both directions.

Where the numbered mission lists come from

Analysis. Search "GTA 6 missions list" and the top results promise chronological walkthroughs. They fall into two groups, and only one is being upfront.

Leonidaverse is the upfront version: its missions page is an empty framework that states plainly that "the exact count will only be confirmed at launch. For reference, GTA V shipped with 69 main missions." Nothing is claimed. GTABase's placeholder behaves the same way.

GTAViSpot's "All Missions List: Every Story Mission in Order" does claim things. It lists eight mission titles — among them "Lucia's Release from Leonida Penitentiary," "Hank's Waffles Diner Robbery," "Sinfrontera National Bank Heist," "Fast Five-Style Vault Chase," "Everglades Helicopter Chase," "Police Convoy Destruction" and "Lucia's Cage Fight" — and sources them to "trailers and development archives," which it says "have confirmed several key mission sequences."

Read that list again and the mechanism is visible. These are not mission titles; they are descriptions of scenes from Trailer 1, Trailer 2 and the Extended Look, written in title case so they read like a table of contents. "Fast Five-Style Vault Chase" is the giveaway — that is a reviewer's comparison to a film, not something a studio would name a mission. The sourcing line is doing quiet work too. Every one of those eight entries is traceable to footage Rockstar has published, so the "trailers" half is just scene-watching; "development archives" is not a category of source at all, and nothing answering to that description has ever been published by Rockstar. Whatever it means, it is not a confirmation — and this site does not treat unauthorized build material as evidence either, under our rumor policy.

The same site's companion walkthrough page goes further, stating that "GTA 6 has 70–85 story missions across 3 acts with 6 major heists" and splitting them into Act 1 Kelly County (Missions 1–22), Act 2 Entering Vice City (23–48) and Act 3 The Keys Syndicate (49–68). No source is given for any part of it, and the numbers do not survive their own page: those three ranges total 68 missions, which is below the bottom of the 70-to-85 range printed above them. Kelly County, Vice City and the Leonida Keys are real announced regions; the acts built around them are not.

Three checks will grade any GTA 6 mission page in under a minute:

The real mission list arrives the way it always does: from players, after November 19, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How many missions are in GTA 6?
Nobody outside Rockstar knows. Rockstar Games has never published a mission count, a mission list, or a single mission title for GTA 6, and no mission name has appeared in Trailer 1, Trailer 2, the Extended Look, the official screenshot gallery or any Newswire post. Rob Nelson has said his own playthrough of main and optional content ran about 80 hours, and that the campaign moves chapter by chapter, but that is a shape rather than a number. Pages printing figures like 70 to 85 story missions across three acts are not sourcing them to anything.
Can you switch between Jason and Lucia during missions?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. Rob Nelson told Famitsu that switching is restricted at points: there is a mission where you make your way through a high-rise housing complex, and Rockstar deliberately locked the player to Jason because he is former special forces and it felt more natural for him to lead. Nelson also said Rockstar had previously allowed free switching in that mission and changed it. Several preview roundups flatten this into you can switch at any time, during open-world gameplay and story missions, which is not what Rockstar described.
Are GTA 6 missions linear?
Less so than GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, according to journalists who attended Rockstar North. The reported examples are concrete rather than vague: a sequence inside a high-rise building with several possible ways to escape, missions where you choose whether to drive or shoot while the other protagonist takes the opposite role, and police pursuits that point toward an effective getaway route you are free to ignore. Rockstar has not said how many missions offer branching approaches or how far the branches go.
Do you need money to progress the GTA 6 story?
At points, yes. Rob Nelson told Famitsu that simply completing missions will not give you enough money to progress the story, and that earning money in the open world is how you advance it. Outlets who attended the previews described this as certain story missions requiring a minimum amount of cash before they become available. Rockstar has not published how many of these gates exist, where they fall, or what the amounts are, so any specific figure you see is a guess.
Can you replay missions in GTA 6?
Unknown. No outlet that attended the Rockstar North previews has reported a mission replay menu, a mission select screen, or a gold medal system, and Rockstar has not mentioned any of them. The pages describing replaying completed story missions from the pause menu to earn gold medals are describing GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 and assuming it carries over, and at least one of them says so on the page. Both Rockstar games shipped with mission replay, so the assumption is reasonable, but silence in a marketing video is not evidence either way.

Source note: Rob Nelson's quotes on chapters, character-switch locking, the store robbery and money-gated story progress are from his Famitsu interview, translated in full by GTAVice.net, checked September 20, 2026. Mission-design details from the closed-door Rockstar North preview — multiple escape routes, the drive-or-shoot role choice, getaway-route guidance, the speed-versus-profit robbery trade — are as reported by Vice and KeenGamer, both summarising IGN's preview, with the map-expansion and switching claims from GTABase's preview roundup. Mission-list claims quoted above are from GTABase, Leonidaverse and GTAViSpot, each checked the same day; we link them so you can verify the comparison yourself, not as recommendations.
