The only guns Rockstar has named
Official. A weapon counts as named here only if its in-game name appeared in material Rockstar itself published. That gives a very short list — because Rockstar has released no weapons page, no arsenal trailer and no Newswire post about guns at all. The names we have arrived by accident, as UI text in a gameplay video.
| Name | Type | Where it appeared |
|---|---|---|
| Duke 556 | Assault rifle | On-screen pickup prompt when Jason takes a downed enemy's rifle during the office firefight late in the Extended Look |
| Moreland 850 | Shotgun | Named in Extended Look interface text |
| Molotov | Throwable | Named in the items section of the wheel |
The naming tells you something on its own. Duke and Moreland are invented brands, exactly as Grand Theft Auto has always handled vehicles — Vapid, Grotti, Declasse. That matters for the section below, because it means a list full of real-world model names cannot be a list of GTA 6 weapon names.
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look — the official presentation, published free on Rockstar Games' YouTube channel after its Netflix premiere on August 27, 2026. Every weapon name on this page comes from text visible inside it.
The wheel is now two wheels
Official — shown in the Extended Look. The biggest structural change is not to the guns, it is to the thing you hold them in. GTA 5's single wheel has been replaced with a tabbed interface in the style of Red Dead Redemption 2: a weapons screen and a separate items screen you flip between while the wheel is held open.
Analysis. Splitting weapons from gear is a quiet statement of intent. In GTA 5 a mask was a weapon-wheel oddity; here it sits in an inventory alongside hats and sunglasses, which is how a game treats something you are expected to put on, use for a job, and get rid of. That connects directly to the wanted level system, where what police can describe about you determines how the search plays out, and to the Criminal Profile that tracks how you are known.
What you carry vs what stays in the car
Credible report. The most repeated claim about GTA 6 weapons is that you can no longer walk around with a mobile armoury. The reporting behind it is real but softer than the headlines: outlets that attended Rockstar North's August 2026 preview sessions describe usable car trunks that hold extra weapons and a change of clothes, with further storage at safehouses.
Official, partially. Rockstar's own pre-order page supports the storage half of this without touching the limit half. It references personal garages, weapon lockers and a secure place to deposit stolen goods to be fenced — first-party language that only makes sense if guns have somewhere to live outside your pockets. Our safehouses and properties guide covers where those lockers sit, and the vehicle guide covers the trunk as part of the wider car system.
The weaker version of the claim is safe to believe: the wheel is organised and finite rather than bottomless, and gear now has a separate home from guns. Whether a hard numeric cap exists is a different question, and nobody at Rockstar has answered it.
How guns behave in your hands
Official. Four handling details are visible in the Extended Look, and together they say more about the arsenal than a roster would.
- Swapping without the wheel. Players flip between two carried firearms on the fly — Lucia moves between a rifle and a pistol at a range without the wheel opening at all.
- Picking up an enemy's gun. Jason takes a fallen enemy's Duke 556 in one continuous animation mid-firefight rather than stopping to loot a body.
- One-handed fire. Lucia shoots a shotgun one-handed with her other arm occupied carrying a bag, so what you are hauling out of a job changes how you fight your way out of it.
- Concealing before you walk in. A dedicated animation hides a firearm behind the character's back before entering a store — a small touch that implies walking in visibly armed is a distinct state the world reacts to.
Preview coverage also describes crouching as a new movement option. Rockstar has not called it a stealth system, and no stealth-focused mission has been shown, so treat it as a reported addition rather than a pillar. For aiming, the focus meter and the red/yellow target zones, see our combat and gunplay breakdown.
Customization: official vs assumed
This is where confirmed and invented get mixed together most often, so it is worth splitting cleanly.
Analysis. The distinction that keeps getting lost is between pre-set variants and a modification system. A round-up describing exclusive weapons with customized grips, engravings and different scopes is describing edition bonus items that arrive already finished — the same way the Ultimate Edition's cars arrive already painted. That is not evidence you will be able to walk a gun into a shop and bolt parts onto it. GTA 5 and GTA Online had exactly that shop, so the feature returning is a perfectly reasonable guess. It is still a guess, and our Ultimate Edition analysis covers what the bonus list does and does not tell you about the wider world.
Why the big weapon lists aren't confirmations
Analysis. Search "GTA 6 weapons" and you will get tidy databases of 19, 30 or 40 entries under a "confirmed" heading. Read the names and the method gives itself away: AR-15 Carbine, MP5 SMG, MAC-11, Ruger 10/22, Springfield Armory M1A. Grand Theft Auto has never shipped a real-world firearm brand name in its life. The series renames every gun the way it renames every car, which means a list carrying real model numbers is telling you what somebody thinks a weapon looks like, not what it is called in the game.
That work is genuinely useful — identifying a receiver from four frames of a trailer is skilled, and the better versions of these pages are honest about it. PC Gamer's, for instance, is framed openly as hunting down guns across trailers and screenshots. The problem is the aggregators downstream that strip the framing and print the same list under "confirmed."
| Claim you will see | What it is actually based on | Status |
|---|---|---|
| "40 confirmed weapons" | Visual identification of real-world models in trailer and screenshot footage | Analysis, not confirmation |
| "You can only carry two rifles and two pistols" | Repetition across write-ups with no originating source | Unconfirmed |
| "Weapons are stored in your trunk" | Hands-off preview coverage from August 2026 sessions | Credible report |
| "There is a weapon pattern in the pre-order bonus" | Rockstar's own pre-order page | Official |
| "The Duke 556 is in the game" | On-screen text in Rockstar's own gameplay video | Official |
What is still unknown
- The full roster and its real names. Rockstar has published nothing. Two guns and one throwable have in-game names; everything else is unnamed.
- How you buy weapons. No gun store, no vendor and no purchase interface has appeared anywhere. Ammu-Nation's return is assumed, not shown — and given how much of the demo's economy runs through robbery and fences, a black-market route is at least as plausible.
- Body armor. Listed as gear in some preview write-ups, never demonstrated on screen, and not described by Rockstar.
- Weapon degradation or cleaning. Red Dead Redemption 2 had it. Nothing in GTA 6 material suggests it either way.
- Throwables beyond the Molotov. Grenades and the rest are assumed from series history, not shown.
- Ammo economy. No ammo counts, purchase points or scarcity model have been described.
Rockstar's pattern with the two trailers and the Extended Look has been to hold system detail back and let it surface through interviews, so a dedicated weapons post before November 19 is plausible but not promised. We will rebuild this page from first-party material when it lands rather than from anything else. For the wider picture, see the Extended Look breakdown and the confirmed vs unverified features tracker.
Frequently asked questions
- How many weapons are confirmed in GTA 6?
- Rockstar Games has never published a GTA 6 weapons list. Only two in-fiction gun names have appeared in official material, both as on-screen text in the Extended Look: the Duke 556 assault rifle and the Moreland 850 shotgun. Every list quoting 19, 30 or 40 confirmed weapons is built by identifying real-world firearm models in trailer and screenshot footage, which tells you what a gun looks like rather than what it is called in the game.
- How many guns can you carry in GTA 6?
- Rockstar has not stated a carry limit. The widely repeated figure — two long guns and two pistols on your person, everything else in the trunk — is not sourced to Rockstar, and the Extended Look never shows a pickup being refused. What is supported is that the weapon wheel is organised into tabs rather than being bottomless, and that previews describe vehicle trunks and safehouses holding extra guns.
- Can you store weapons in your car in GTA 6?
- Preview coverage says yes. Outlets that attended Rockstar North's August 2026 sessions describe usable car trunks that hold extra weapons and a change of clothes, and Rockstar's own Ultimate Edition page references personal garages with weapon lockers and a secure place to deposit stolen goods. Rockstar has not published a menu or a capacity, so treat the trunk as reported rather than demonstrated.
- Does GTA 6 have weapon customization?
- Cosmetic weapon variants are official — Rockstar's pre-order page lists a Vice City weapon pattern in the Vintage Vice City Pack and describes Ultimate Edition weapons among its bonuses. A player-facing modification system with scopes, silencers, magazines, camouflages and engravings is not official. Those specifics circulate widely but trace to aggregator write-ups, and no weapon mod bench or attachment menu has been shown in any Rockstar video.
- Is Ammu-Nation in GTA 6?
- Unconfirmed. No gun store, no purchase interface and no weapons vendor has appeared in a trailer, in the Extended Look or on the official site. The guns shown being acquired in official footage are picked up from downed enemies or already in the characters' hands, so how you buy weapons in Leonida is still a complete blank.
Source note: Weapon names, the two-tab wheel, one-handed fire, mid-fight pickups and the store-entry concealment animation are labeled Official because they are visible in Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look; the Duke 556 pickup prompt and the concealment animation were flagged in Engadget's frame-by-frame round-up, and the items-wheel disguise categories and the Moreland 850 in Postmode's. Trunk and safehouse storage comes from Vice's preview compilation. Weapon patterns, weapon lockers and edition weapons are quoted from Rockstar's own official Grand Theft Auto VI site. The visual-identification approach behind published rosters is illustrated by PC Gamer and GTABase. We do not use leaked build footage — see our rumor policy.
