Does GTA 6 Have Hurricanes? What Rockstar Has Actually Shown About Weather

Set a game in Florida and everyone assumes a hurricane. Three official videos, roughly 40 minutes of footage, and not one storm event — here is what the weather system has genuinely demonstrated, and where the flood claims came from.

Quick answer: No hurricane, tornado, flood or storm surge has ever appeared in official GTA 6 material, and Rockstar has never used the word. What is shown is ordinary weather done well: rain, overcast and stormy skies, wet roads with pooling water, and a full day-and-night cycle that runs through sunlit beaches, sunsets and rain-soaked night streets. Weather as a gameplay event — something that closes roads or forces you to change plans — is unconfirmed. The "hurricanes were cut" story traces to a single anonymous account.

The weather Rockstar has actually shown

Official. Start with the footage, because it is the only first-party evidence that exists. Rockstar has published three GTA 6 videos — Trailer 1 in December 2023, Trailer 2 in May 2025, and Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look in August 2026 — and between them they establish a clear baseline.

Trailer 1 is where most of the weather analysis has come from. It contains a heavy downpour sequence, overcast and stormy skies behind Vice City, road surfaces that visibly shift from dry to wet, and water collecting in low spots and against barriers rather than spreading in an even sheet. That last detail is the one graphics-minded fans keep pointing at, because pooling behaviour implies the engine is modelling where water goes rather than painting a wet-road texture over everything.

The Extended Look adds the other half: a roughly 26-minute presentation captured on PS5, running through sunlit beaches, orange sunsets, dark interiors and rain-soaked night streets, with reflections and volumetric lighting doing heavy work in every one of those conditions. Rockstar was showing off a lighting and weather pipeline. It was not showing off a storm.

Rain — shownHeavy rainfall in Trailer 1, wet night streets in the Extended Look. Present in official footage across multiple videos and years.
Overcast and stormy skies — shownGrey, low, weather-heavy skies behind Vice City in trailer footage, distinct from the postcard-blue default.
Wet-road and standing water rendering — shownSurfaces change state with rainfall; water pools rather than sheeting. A rendering behaviour, visible on screen.
Hurricane, tornado, flood, storm surge — never shownZero frames across three official videos. Zero mentions in Rockstar's site copy, Newswire posts or any on-record developer interview.

The day-and-night cycle is the real reveal

Official. The most concrete environmental thing the Extended Look confirmed is not weather at all — it is time. The showcase moves through a complete day-and-night cycle, and Vice City looks like a materially different city depending on the hour: beaches under midday sun, an orange-hour skyline, then neon signs, headlights and club lighting taking over after dark.

That matters more than it sounds. A day-night cycle plus changing conditions is what people usually mean when they type "does GTA 6 have dynamic weather," and by that ordinary definition the answer is yes. What Rockstar has never published is a technical description — no list of weather states, no mention of seasons, no explanation of whether weather is on a timer, tied to regions, or scripted per mission. The full Extended Look breakdown covers everything else the showcase put on the record.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look — the official presentation, free on Rockstar Games' YouTube channel after its Netflix premiere on August 27, 2026. Twenty-six minutes of gameplay, and the strongest weather in it is rain on a night street.

The hurricane question, answered honestly

Analysis. "Does GTA 6 have hurricanes" is one of the most-searched questions about the game, and it has a boring, verifiable answer that almost nobody prints: Rockstar has never said anything about hurricanes, and none has ever been shown.

It is worth being precise about what that does and does not mean. It is not evidence that hurricanes are absent from the shipping game — Rockstar held back the rebuilt wanted system and the body and weight simulation until an hour-late showcase, so absence from marketing proves very little on its own. It means the claim has no source. Every page presenting hurricanes as a GTA 6 feature is describing something it has not seen and cannot attribute.

The reason the idea is so sticky is obvious and has nothing to do with evidence. Leonida is Florida. Florida has hurricanes. Rockstar's own official framing — "Vice City, USA. The darkest side of the sunniest place in America" — invites you to think about weather. That is an excellent reason to want a hurricane and no reason at all to report one.

A setting that would suit a feature is not a source for that feature.

Where the hurricane and flood claims come from

Rumor. Read enough of these pages and the same three ingredients turn up, recycled between sites without ever gaining a citation.

What is citedWhat it actually isWeight
A Rockstar job postingA listing for an environmental systems programmer mentioning weather simulation, usually paraphrased and rarely linked. At most it shows Rockstar employs people who work on weather — true of every open-world studio alive.Near zero
"Leaked footage" of a stormUnattributed clips and screenshots. At least one widely-shared "dynamic weather screenshot" of a flooded Vice City has been publicly questioned as fake. We do not use leaked material either way — see our rumor policy.None
The September 2022 build leakEarly-build clips reportedly included rain and lightning. Even taken at face value, that describes ordinary weather in a four-year-old work-in-progress, not hurricanes — and a 2022 build says nothing about a 2026 game.Very low

From those ingredients the aggregator pages build remarkably specific mechanics: storm surge, streets turning to rivers, submerged cars, debris blocking routes, weather rerouting traffic in real time, whole districts closing temporarily. None of it is sourced. It is a wishlist written in the present tense — the same pattern we traced through the invented list of GTA 6 endings and the "confirmed" weapon rosters that name real-world firearms the series has never used.

The "extreme weather was cut" report

Rumor. Running alongside the hurricane hype is its mirror image: that Rockstar planned hurricanes and tornadoes, then scrapped them. This one is at least traceable, so it is worth tracing.

The claim originates with Rockstar Universe, a fan-run Rockstar news account on X. Despite the name, it is not a Rockstar Games channel and has no affiliation with the company — a distinction that gets lost every time the claim is re-reported. ComicBook picked it up in 2023, and ScreenRant, SVG and others have carried it since, generally with the caveat that insider claims should not be taken at face value.

Nothing has been added to it since. No outlet has independently confirmed it, no named developer has been asked about it on the record, and Rockstar has never commented. The explanations that circulate for why it was supposedly cut — performance headroom on a game targeting 30fps, or reducing crunch — are commentators reasoning backwards from a claim they cannot verify.

Our position: the honest label is unverified in both directions. There is no evidence extreme weather was cut, because there is no evidence it was ever in. If you want the confirmed side of the performance question instead, the PS5 Pro and frame rate page tracks what Rockstar and Sony have actually said.

Water is confirmed. Weather events are not.

Official. This is the distinction that gets collapsed most often, and keeping the two apart resolves most of the confusion around this topic.

Water in GTA 6 is extensively confirmed — as terrain and as activity, not as a hazard. The Extended Look and Rockstar's official material show airboats running through the Grassrivers wetlands, scuba diving, kayaking, jet skis, boats and open ocean. Rockstar's own region copy describes sawgrass wetlands and alligators. Our Leonida map guide covers all six official regions, and the side activities catalogue sorts every water pastime by how strong the evidence for it actually is.

What none of that establishes is water doing something to you. Swimming in a swamp is a place to be. A storm surge is an event that changes the map state. Rockstar has demonstrated the first extensively and the second not once — and pages that cite the airboat footage as evidence for flooding mechanics are quietly swapping one for the other.

Has a GTA game ever done this?

Official history. Almost, once, and not in the way people remember.

GameWeatherDisaster events
Vice City Stories (2006)Basic for its eraHurricane warnings close the bridges to the mainland early in the story and lift as you progress — a scripted gate doing the job drawbridges did in older GTA games, not a simulated storm.
GTA 5 (2013)Dynamic, including thunderstorms and fogNone. No hurricanes, tornadoes, floods or earthquakes in seven regions and thirteen years of updates.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)The studio's most detailed system to date — snow, fog, heavy storms, regional climatesNone.
GTA 6 (Nov 19, 2026)Rain, storms, wet surfaces and a full day-night cycle shownNothing shown, nothing announced, nothing ruled out.

Analysis. The pattern is consistent enough to be worth stating plainly: across two decades Rockstar has invested heavily in atmospheric weather and never once shipped a natural disaster. That is not proof GTA 6 breaks the pattern or keeps it. It does mean a hurricane would be a genuine first for the studio, which is exactly the kind of thing a marketing department shows you rather than hides — and across roughly 40 minutes of official footage, they haven't.

What is still unknown

We will update this page the moment Rockstar shows or says anything on the record. Until then the accurate answer to "does GTA 6 have hurricanes" is that nobody outside Rockstar knows, the studio has never mentioned one, and every page telling you otherwise is describing footage that does not exist. Every official video is catalogued on our trailer timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Does GTA 6 have hurricanes?
Not as anything Rockstar Games has shown or announced. Across all three official videos — Trailer 1, Trailer 2 and Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look — no hurricane, tornado, flood event or storm surge appears, and Rockstar has never used the word hurricane in any GTA 6 material. Everyday weather is clearly in: rain, overcast and stormy skies, wet roads with standing water, and a full day-and-night cycle are all visible in official footage. The hurricane claim is not a Rockstar statement being reported, it is speculation about a Florida-inspired setting that has been repeated until it reads like a feature list.
Does GTA 6 have dynamic weather?
Effectively yes, though Rockstar has never published a technical description of the system. An Extended Look moves through sunlit beaches, orange sunsets, neon-lit clubs and rain-soaked night streets, which is a full day-and-night cycle with changing conditions rather than a fixed skybox. Trailer 1 shows heavy rain, overcast skies, roads that read as wet rather than dry, and water pooling in low spots. What has not been shown is weather as a gameplay event — nothing that closes a road, floods a district or forces you to change plans.
Did Rockstar cut extreme weather from GTA 6?
Unverified. The claim that hurricanes and tornadoes were planned and later scrapped traces to Rockstar Universe, a fan-run Rockstar news account on X — despite the name, it is not a Rockstar Games channel — reported by ComicBook in 2023 and repeated since by ScreenRant, SVG and others. No outlet has independently confirmed it, no named developer has addressed it, and Rockstar has never commented. It is worth knowing the claim exists and worth knowing it rests on a single anonymous account. Treat it as rumor in both directions: there is no evidence extreme weather was cut, and no evidence it was ever in.
Does GTA 6 have flooding?
No flooding event has been shown. The pages describing streets turning to rivers, submerged cars and blocked routes are describing a feature nobody has seen — they cite unnamed leaks and an unlinked Rockstar job posting rather than footage. What official footage does show is standing water: Trailer 1 has rain pooling beside a highway and collecting against barriers rather than spreading evenly, which is water accumulation as a rendering detail, not a district-scale flood mechanic.
Has GTA ever had a hurricane before?
Once, and not as weather. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories in 2006 used hurricane warnings as a story device — the bridges to the mainland are closed early in the game and open up as you progress, the same job the drawbridges did in earlier GTA titles. That is a scripted gate, not a simulated storm. GTA 5 in 2013 shipped dynamic weather including thunderstorms but no natural disasters, and Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 added snow, fog and heavy storms without disaster events. The series has never simulated one.

Source note: the description of the Extended Look's day-and-night cycle — sunlit beaches, orange sunsets, illuminated clubs and rain-soaked nighttime streets — and its weather, reflection and volumetric lighting work is from 80 Level. Fan reaction to the rain and overcast weather visible in Trailer 1 was covered by GamingBible, which notes nothing about weather mechanics is officially confirmed. The "extreme weather was scrapped" claim, its origin with the Rockstar Universe account and the caution against taking insider claims at face value are from ScreenRant. The Vice City Stories hurricane-warning bridge gate is documented at GTABase. Release date, platforms and the "darkest side of the sunniest place in America" line are from the official Grand Theft Auto VI site. Rockstar Games has published no statement on weather systems in GTA 6; where this page says "unconfirmed," that is why. We do not use leaked build footage — see our rumor policy.
