GTA 6 money works very differently from GTA 5. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, told IGN that money matters more in this story than in earlier GTAs: some missions won't continue until you've earned enough, previews say the cash you carry can disappear when you die, and stolen loot only becomes money once a fence buys it. Below are all 12 changes from GTA 5, each with its source, plus what Rockstar still hasn't said and 5 money rules for day one.
GTA 6 money: the 12 changes from GTA 5
GTA 5's economy had a problem. Players used Lester's assassination missions to profit on the in-game stock market, as series guides from GamesRadar+ and GTABase describe. Reported According to TweakTown's summary of TGG's July creator preview at Rockstar North, Rockstar acknowledged there wasn't enough to spend money on in GTA V.
GTA 6 is built the other way around. Here's every change at a glance; each one is explained below.

Changes 1-4: money matters again
1. The story waits for your money
Official Nelson told IGN that Rockstar has made money matter more in this story than in previous GTA games, and that there will be parts of the game where you need to make money to advance the mission flow. His examples of how to earn it: boosting cars and selling them, or sticking places up. Official IGN's 69 New Details preview and Game Informer's cover story say the same thing: sometimes you have to raise a set amount before the main missions continue.
The idea has roots in the series. In GTA Vice City (2002), buying businesses opened up new missions. Our read: GTA 6 takes that idea and moves it to the center of the whole story.
Official Nelson also explained why. In Red Dead Redemption 2, players kept asking why Arthur followed Dutch, so Rockstar made Dutch the only one who knew where Arthur's and the gang's money was, to give the player a motive of their own. In GTA 6, money is that motive: as Jason and Lucia, Nelson says, you can always be either making money to get out of the predicament they're in, or spending time together.
2. Free-roam crime is the main event
Official Nelson told IGN that robbery targets are very important to the gameplay loop, and you can hit them alone or as a duo. Reported At TGG's preview, as summarized by TweakTown, he called making money this way, off-mission, an important part of the game. And the targets on the map he showed weren't the full list:
The little gas stations and stuff are not even on here.
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to TGG (via TweakTown)
Our read: in GTA 6, the time between missions isn't free time. It's the job.
3. Your money lives in three places
Reported TweakTown's summary of the TGG preview lists three ways money exists in GTA 6:
- Cash on you, which can be deposited, or lost.
- An ATM card.
- A digital BuckMe bank balance.
That split sounds like bookkeeping until you see what it means for the cash in your pocket.
4. The cash on you can vanish
Reported Nelson told the French magazine Trois Couleurs, as reported by Beebom, that cash you carry is lost when you die, while your bank account is safe:
If I get killed and haven't deposited it, that money disappears.
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to Trois Couleurs (via Beebom)
Reported A fan translation of his Famitsu interview, by iGrandTheftAuto, says getting busted costs you cash as well. For comparison, GTA V charged a hospital fee when you died and bail fees when you were busted, according to GTA Wiki's history of the series.
There are also two of you now. Official If either Jason or Lucia gets arrested, Nelson told IGN, it's simply Busted, then a restart, even if the other one was still getting away. IGN's 69 New Details preview reported the same rule.

Changes 5-8: rob pretty much anything
5. You can rob pretty much anything
Official Nelson told IGN you can rob "pretty much anything", even a shop that sells headphones. In his demo, he was going to hit a shop, a bank or a payday loan place.
Official He also walked IGN through the robbery montage in An Extended Look, Rockstar's gameplay video: Lucia masks up outside a pawn shop while Jason tells her to keep it clean, then, in a jewelry store, she fights a man for his gun. Our GTA 6 robberies guide follows Nelson's pawn shop job step by step.
6. Five tiers of robbery
Reported TweakTown's write-up of TGG's preview sorts free-roam robberies into five loosely defined tiers. That's TweakTown's summary of the preview, not Rockstar's own wording. It names local stores as the lower tier; the order of the rest below is ours.
| Tier | Targets | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Local stores | Payday loan places, phone repair shops, convenience stores | Pay a few thousand dollars; usually not shown as icons on the map |
| Jewelry stores | Jewelry stores | Official An Extended Look shows Lucia wrestling a man in one |
| Banks | Banks | Official The Launch Trailer shows a bank vault full of flying cash |
| Mini heists | Security vans and money transport vehicles | Official An Extended Look shows an armored-truck robbery |
| Compounds | Gangs and groups | Hold drugs, money and guns; one is exclusive to the Ultimate Edition |

Official The Ultimate Edition's compound is the PTT Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store, run by a Southside Vice City gang. Rockstar says you raid it, and if you escape safely, you score special items and contraband. Everything else that edition adds is in our Standard vs Ultimate Edition guide.

7. The map shows what a job is worth
Reported According to TweakTown's summary, higher-tier robberies show up on the map with their potential take: what you'd walk away with from a clean job. Our read: you can weigh the payout against the risk before you go in, which changes how you pick targets.
Reported The rest you hear about. Nelson told TGG that you learn about robberies emergently, through people telling you during the course of the game; NPCs can tip you off about places to rob.
Official Even Jason does it. On the way to a pawn shop in Nelson's demo for IGN, the pair drove past a police impound lot and Jason asked if they should go do it. Nelson says he'd never heard that line before, so he dropped the pawn shop and took the new job. Official Fences hand out work too: a car fence told them about a police impound lot and gave them the door code.
8. Robberies can go wrong
Official The prep is on you. During his demo, Nelson told IGN he should really have been preparing for the robbery, for example by putting a vehicle out front. He didn't: he was just going to see what happens. Reported IGN's August preview, by Rachel Weber, says he got Wasted when a car sideswiped him as he fled. If carried cash works the way the previews describe, anything he had on him was gone.
Reported TweakTown's summary lists what can go wrong: stores can have security cameras, NPCs will intervene, and some safes need a combination code. Official An Extended Look shows a store owner with a pump shotgun. Official Nelson found his safe's code. He was carrying an explosive too, but says it would have damaged some of the take.
Robbing works best as a team. Reported In IGN's description of a pawn shop job, Jason searches the back for the safe while Lucia keeps things under control by the door. Official Nelson says robbing stores or banks together also counts as time together for their relationship.
And it won't turn you into a monster. Official Nelson says the Criminal Profile treats robberies, crimes a mission needs and self-defense as "fair game"; going far beyond that, again and again, is what shifts it. Our Criminal Profile explainer has the details.
Changes 9-10: loot isn't money until it's sold
9. Loot has to be fenced
Reported According to TweakTown's summary, what you steal goes into a duffel bag, and it isn't money yet. Official IGN's 69 New Details preview says there are specific fences for specific goods, such as a car fence and a jewelry fence. Official In Nelson's demo, the fence showed up green on the map with a dollar sign, and they sold him jewelry.
Our read: a robbery isn't over when you leave the store. It's over when the right fence has paid you, and until then, everything in that bag is at risk.
10. Cars are cash, if you're careful
Official Nelson reminded IGN that in earlier games you could just press triangle to hotwire and steal any vehicle you wanted. Not anymore. Older cars need a slim jim, prestige cars need a key cloner, and some stay out of reach until later in the story. You can always carjack any driver, though.
Official Before you steal, your phone's scanner app, called WAiNK according to Game Informer, tells you:
- whether the car is locked, alarmed or tracked
- what it's worth at a Pay 'n' Spray or a specialty car fence
- what it would cost to register it as your own
Official Condition matters. Nelson told IGN the car fence pays less for a damaged car, so he repaired his first. His car also had an advanced tracker: drive slowly and it pings the police with your location, so you have to drive it fast. Tools, tiers and trackers are covered in our guide to stealing cars in GTA 6.

Changes 11-12: earning it and spending it
11. Hunting pays, fishing doesn't
Not every dollar has to come from a robbery. Reported Nelson told TGG, as reported by Beebom, that fishing is catch and release, so you can't keep what you catch, while hunting is the earner. Official Game Informer counts more than 170 animal species in Leonida. Our read: if hunting pays, there's no shortage of things to track.

12. Money finally has somewhere to go
This is Rockstar's answer to GTA V's empty wallet problem. Here's what the interviews say money is for:
- Official Cars: registering a stolen car as your own costs money.
- Official Guns: every weapon you've purchased, Nelson says, is always available in the back of your personal vehicle.
- Official Clothes: purchasing and wearing a new outfit removes any heat you have.
- Official Shops worth finding: each salon and clothing shop has standard stock plus items only that shop sells.
Reported What the big-money items are, Rockstar won't say yet, according to TweakTown. Reported And there's no shortcut: Nelson told the creators at Kinda Funny, as reported by Notebookcheck, that there are no real-money purchases in the single-player game.
What Rockstar hasn't told us about money
A lot of GTA 6 money talk online goes further than the sources. Here's what is still unknown:
- Payouts. There are no official figures. The only number in the previews is TweakTown's: local stores pay a few thousand dollars.
- The story's price tags. Rockstar hasn't said how much you'll need to raise before gated missions continue.
- Big-ticket items. Rockstar won't say what the expensive things to buy are.
- A stock market or property. Whether GTA 6 has a stock market like GTA V's, or lets you buy property, Rockstar hasn't said either way.
5 money rules for day one
These are our rules, built from what Rockstar's own demos showed:
- Bank it before the job. Cash on you is cash at risk. Empty your pockets at an ATM before every big job, and again on the way home.
- Scan before you steal. Check a car's tracker, value and registration cost first. If the scanner says tracker, drive it fast or leave it.
- Park the getaway first. The getaway car goes out front before you go in. Nelson didn't.
- Repair it, then fence it. A dent costs money. Fix the car, then take it, or your loot, to the fence that actually buys what you're carrying.
- Rob together. One finds the safe, one holds the door. It pays, and it counts as time together for the relationship.

Our take: being broke early is the point
Is GTA 6 going to leave you broke? Early on, probably. Our read is that this is deliberate. When the story can stop until you've earned enough, cash can vanish on the way home and loot needs a buyer, every dollar becomes a goal, and the open world becomes the place you earn it instead of the space between missions.
That's the opposite of GTA V, where, by Rockstar's own reported admission, there wasn't enough to spend money on. The open questions are about balance: how big the payouts are, how much the story's money gates ask for and what the big-ticket purchases turn out to be. FAQ
How does money work in GTA 6?
You earn it mostly through free-roam crime. Rockstar's Rob Nelson told IGN you can rob pretty much anything, and named boosting and selling cars as the other main earner. Some parts of the story need money before the missions continue, and loot has to be sold to a fence before it becomes cash.
What is BuckMe in GTA 6?
According to TweakTown's summary of TGG's preview, BuckMe holds your digital bank balance. It's one of three places money exists, alongside the cash you carry and an ATM card. Money in the bank is reported to be safe when you die; the cash on you is not.
Do you lose money when you die or get busted in GTA 6?
You lose the cash you're carrying, according to the previews. Nelson told Trois Couleurs that undeposited money disappears if he's killed, and a fan translation of his Famitsu interview says getting busted puts it at risk too. Deposit at an ATM before risky jobs.
How many types of robbery are there in GTA 6?
TweakTown's write-up of TGG's preview lists five tiers: local stores, jewelry stores, banks, mini heists on security vans, and gang compounds. That's the outlet's summary, not Rockstar's wording. Nelson also says you can rob "pretty much anything", including small places that aren't marked on the map.
Is there a stock market in GTA 6?
Rockstar hasn't said either way. In GTA V, players profited from Lester's assassination missions on the stock market, but neither Rockstar nor the previews have mentioned one for GTA 6.
Can you buy in-game money with real money in GTA 6?
Not in single player, according to the creators at Kinda Funny: Notebookcheck reports Nelson told them there are no real-money purchases in the single-player game.
