GTA 6 has already broken records before launch, and the biggest ones are still to come. Its first trailer set three Guinness World Records in a day, its gameplay reveal went to number one on Netflix, and analysts call its pre-orders the strongest on record. On November 19, 2026, it goes after GTA 5's launch records: $815.7 million in 24 hours and $1 billion in three days.
Records GTA 6 has already broken (1 to 8)
1. Three Guinness records in one day. Official Trailer 1 arrived on December 5, 2023, and drew 90,421,491 YouTube views in its first 24 hours. Guinness gave it three records: the most-viewed video game reveal in 24 hours, the most-liked video game trailer (8.9 million likes in a day), and the most-viewed YouTube video of any kind in 24 hours outside music, beating MrBeast's 59.4 million. GTA 5's first trailer set its own Guinness record with 23 million views across a year; GTA 6 did four times that in a day.

2. The biggest video launch ever, at the time. Official Take-Two says Trailer 2 passed 475 million views across all platforms in 24 hours in May 2025, and called it the biggest video launch ever at the time. The figure is Take-Two's own and unaudited. Reported Two movie trailers have passed it since, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (719 million) and Avengers: Doomsday (503 million), according to Variety. No video game has come close.
3. Number one on Netflix. Official In August 2026, Rockstar put An Extended Look, a 26-minute gameplay reveal, on Netflix. It drew 31.1 million views from August 27 to 30, was the number one title on the service that week and topped the chart in 87 of 93 countries, according to Netflix's Top 10 data. That's a whole new audience: people without a console, watching someone else play GTA.
4. The most-watched gaming showcase of 2026. Reported Streams Charts says the gameplay reveal peaked at more than 3.97 million live viewers across platforms, ahead of Summer Game Fest 2026 at 3.81 million. One game outdrew a show built around dozens.
5. The strongest pre-orders on record. Official Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for Ultimate (our editions guide lists what each includes). Take-Two has never given a pre-order number, but its CEO was unusually blunt in August, saying nothing like it had been seen at Take-Two or in the industry. Xbox also says it is seeing record GTA VI pre-orders.
Unprecedented and astonishing.
Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two CEO, on GTA 6 pre-orders (earnings call, August 7, 2026)
Reported Newzoo estimated about $260 million in digital pre-orders worldwide in the first week alone and called it the strongest pre-order campaign on record. Sensor Tower estimated that pre-orders jumped 436% after the Netflix reveal. Most recently, Insider Gaming reported on October 20, 2026, that Sensor Tower's tracker puts GTA 6's pre-order revenue at about $630 million, roughly $468 million on PlayStation and $162 million on Xbox. These are unconfirmed third-party estimates of digital sales.
6. Magazines that sell out. Reported Dazed's GTA VI cover in August 2026 reportedly became its best-performing cover story ever and sold out in under an hour, according to LBB Online. Official In October, LOVE magazine's Issue 27 GTA cover was listed as sold out the day it went on sale. 7. It moved the console market. Reported NielsenIQ data reported by VGC shows UK PS5 sales up 33% and Xbox Series sales up 34% in the week after the Netflix reveal. That's timing, not proven cause. Official Sony says GTA VI plays best on PS5 and is releasing two limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers on November 19, at $84.99 each.
8. A real city is becoming Vice City. Official On September 22, 2026, a "Welcome to Vice City" sign of about 4,700 square feet was lifted onto the roof of the Kaseya Center, the Miami Heat's arena. On Wednesday, November 18, the night before launch, the Heat host "A Night in Vice City" against the Milwaukee Bucks in a reimagined uniform. Our Miami Beach Vice City marketing story covers the campaign.

Records Rockstar set first (9 to 14)
GTA 6 isn't the first GTA to break records. Here's the history it's up against.
9. America's best-selling game, twice. Official According to NPD, GTA III was America's best-selling console game of 2001. In 2002, Vice City was number one and GTA III number two.
10. The best-selling PS2 game ever. Official Guinness lists San Andreas as the best-selling PlayStation 2 game, with 17.33 million copies on PS2 alone.
11. The largest launch in interactive entertainment. Official GTA IV launched on April 29, 2008, and sold about 3.6 million copies for about $310 million on day one, then about 6 million copies and more than $500 million in its first week. Take-Two called it "the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment". Reported Its Guinness records for the highest-grossing game and entertainment product in 24 hours later went to Black Ops II, then GTA 5.
12. The best day in entertainment history. Official GTA 5 launched on September 17, 2013, and sold 11.21 million copies for $815.7 million in 24 hours, more than double GTA IV's first day. Guinness gave it seven records in 2013, six of them for sales, including the best-selling and highest-grossing video game in 24 hours and the highest revenue by an entertainment product in 24 hours.
13. $1 billion in three days. Official On September 20, 2013, Take-Two said GTA 5 had passed $1 billion, the fastest any entertainment property had reached that mark, and Guinness agreed. Five years later, Red Dead Redemption 2 made $725 million in three days, which Take-Two called entertainment's biggest opening weekend.
14. 230 million copies. Official Take-Two says GTA 5 has now sold in more than 230 million copies across three console generations, and the series nearly 475 million. Reported Only Minecraft (350 million) is reported to have sold more. In 2018, MarketWatch called GTA 5 the most financially successful media title of all time, based on a Cowen analyst estimate of about $6 billion, and that was before roughly 140 million more copies.
Two records GTA 6 sets just by showing up (15 and 16)
15. The longest wait in GTA history. Official From GTA 5 to GTA 6 is 13 years and 2 months, or 4,811 days. The previous record, GTA IV to GTA 5, was 5 years and 4 months. Someone who was 10 when GTA 5 came out is 23 now.
16. The first GTA delayed twice. Official GTA IV and GTA 5 were each delayed once. GTA 6 was first set for fall 2025; in May 2025 Rockstar moved it to May 26, 2026, and in November 2025 to November 19, 2026, apologizing both times for the longer wait. It's a first in another way too: the physical edition has a download code in the box and no disc, and Rockstar says a disc will not be included. Pre-loading opens on November 12 for digital pre-orders, the same day physical copies go on sale. Our release date hub has the full timeline.

GTA 6 sales: records that could fall on November 19 (17 to 20)
17. The biggest launch in entertainment history. Official The competition: Avengers: Endgame still holds the biggest worldwide movie opening, about $1.2 billion in a weekend. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II made more than $800 million in three days, and Hogwarts Legacy $850 million in two weeks. Reported Newzoo's forecast for GTA 6's first week runs from $3.25 billion to $5.2 billion, with $4.5 billion as its main case. Even the cautious end is nearly three times Endgame's weekend.
18. The most copies in a launch week. Reported GTA 5 sold 11.21 million copies on day one. Forecasts for GTA 6's first week start around 37 million (Newzoo's cautious case) and go up to about 51 million (its main case). Piper Sandler forecasts 48 million at launch. Official There are about 129 million current-generation consoles worldwide, by Take-Two's estimate, so 37 million copies would mean about 3 in every 10 of them getting GTA 6 in week one. 51 million would be about 4 in 10.
19. The biggest world Rockstar has built. Reported Based on studio figures given to reporters (via the New York Times and TGG), Leonida is about twice the size of GTA 5's map and three times Red Dead Redemption 2's, and Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos. Rockstar itself hasn't called it its biggest map. Our Leonida map guide breaks down every region.
20. The most expensive game ever made? Rumor This is the one nobody can confirm, because Rockstar has never said what GTA 6 cost. Reported Guinness reported a budget of about £170 million (about $276 million) for GTA 5, development and marketing together. For GTA 6, analyst Michael Pachter estimates more than $1.5 billion including marketing, and about $10 billion in lifetime revenue. Those are his estimates, not Rockstar's. Official What Take-Two has said: it expects $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion in net bookings for its financial year ending in March 2027, with GTA 6 launching inside it.
Do the math: $1 billion in a day?
This part is our arithmetic, built only on the numbers above.
- At $79.99 a copy, GTA 6 needs about 12.5 million copies to make $1 billion. GTA 5 sold 11.21 million on its first day, so GTA 6 barely has to match that to reach a billion in a day.
- To pass Endgame's $1.2 billion, it needs about 15 million copies.
- If Newzoo's main case of about 51 million copies in week one is right, that's about $4 billion at the standard price alone, before a single Ultimate Edition or a dollar of GTA Online.
Two things cut the other way, and one cuts in GTA 6's favor. Official GTA 5 launched into about 160 million PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles; GTA 6 launches into about 129 million PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, with no PC version at launch, so it has to reach a bigger share of console owners. But it's cheaper than it looks: by US government inflation data, GTA 5's $59.99 in September 2013 is about $86.33 in September 2026 dollars. In real terms, GTA 6 at $79.99 costs less than GTA 5 did.

Records GTA 6 probably won't break
GTA 5's 230 million copies took 13 years and three console generations, so GTA 6 won't touch that for a long time, and Minecraft's 350 million is further still.
Reported Streaming may wait, too. GTA 5 was Twitch's most-watched game of 2021, with 2.1 billion hours watched, eight years after launch, driven largely by roleplay servers on PC. GTA 6 launches on consoles only, so our read is that its streaming records may wait for a PC version.
When we'll know which records fell
Official Take-Two announced GTA IV's first-week numbers eight days after launch, GTA 5's $1 billion three days after launch, and Red Dead Redemption 2's three-day numbers four days after launch.
The launch-week calendar to watch:
- November 12: pre-loading opens and physical copies go on sale.
- November 18: the Miami Heat play as Vice City.
- November 19: GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar hasn't announced the exact unlock time.
Our read: if GTA 6 makes $1 billion in a day, expect Take-Two to say so within the first week. The countdown tracks the hours.
Our take: what falls on November 19
These are our predictions, not forecasts from Rockstar, Take-Two or any analyst.
- $1 billion faster than GTA 5's three days: very likely. Our bet is one day. The price is lower in real terms than GTA 5's, and the pre-orders are reported as the strongest on record, and those copies count on day one.
- Beating Endgame's $1.2 billion opening: likely, inside the first weekend.
- More than 40 million copies in launch week: possible. It needs stock, servers and downloads to all hold up on day one.
- The one we're most sure of: no entertainment launch has ever been watched, streamed and talked about like this one.
GTA IV's $310 million first day became GTA 5's $815.7 million. The question for GTA 6 isn't whether it breaks GTA 5's records, it's by how much. If you're planning to make content around that moment, our guide to making money with GTA 6 covers the options.
