GTA 6 weapons and combat work very differently from GTA 5. You can only carry a few guns, the rest live in your car, aiming no longer snaps onto enemies by default, and you can now drop an enemy without killing them or shoot the gun out of their hand. Below is every combat change revealed so far, with what Rockstar Games has confirmed kept apart from what previewers reported.
The 2+2 rule: you can't carry an arsenal anymore
The biggest change touches everything else. In GTA 5 your pockets were bottomless: a minigun, a sniper rifle and a rocket launcher all fit somewhere. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson told IGN that in older GTAs you were "a bit all-powerful", the only person with an invisible arsenal hidden away, and that GTA 6's world isn't like that.
Reported Nelson spelled out the new limit for the creator TGG during the July preview at Rockstar North, as reported by GamingBolt. You can always keep two handguns concealed. You can also carry two long guns, rifles or shotguns, but you can't put both on your back: one goes on your back, the other has to be in your hands. Reported In Nelson's interview with Famitsu (in an English fan translation), he made the same point: long guns can't be hidden any more.
People react to what they can see
Reported A long gun slung on your back should be fine. Holding one ready is a different story, according to Nelson via GamingBolt:
If you've got one in your hand, people don't like it, and they react and start moving away from you.
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to TGG (via GamingBolt)
Reported GTA BOOM's report of the same preview adds that police can issue a warning, and that holding a weapon ready in both hands starts to escalate a situation. Official You also aren't the only armed person in Leonida: IGN reports that other civilians carry weapons too, and some NPCs will start the violence themselves. Our read: walking into a store with a concealed pistol and walking in with a rifle now say two very different things before anyone fires a shot.

Your car is now your armory
So where does the rest go? Official Your personal vehicle. IGN reports that personal vehicles have working trunks for weapons and a change of clothes, and Nelson told IGN in The Big Interview that every weapon you've purchased is always available in the back of your personal vehicle. You can call that car to you at any time.
Reported GTA BOOM adds a detail: any vehicle can hold Jason's or Lucia's long guns for a while, but only the personal vehicle keeps your full selected loadout. Leave a rifle in a random car and you won't get it back.
Official Storage goes beyond the car. Rockstar's Ultimate Edition and pre-order pages list garages with a weapon locker, such as Shore Court and Paradise Garage. Reported Nelson also mentioned Ammu-Nation lockers to Famitsu.
Reported Weapons are physical enough that Jason and Lucia can hand guns to each other, according to GTA BOOM. Our read: before a job the loop looks a lot like Red Dead Redemption 2. Drive there, open the trunk, take what the plan needs, and live with that choice once you're inside. Our GTA 6 vs GTA 5 guide covers this and 19 other old habits that stop working.
Free aim by default, heavier guns
This will be the most debated change. Reported According to TGG's preview, reported by GTA BOOM, GTA 6 defaults to free aim, with less lock-on than previous GTA games. Read the wording carefully: Nelson said some aim stickiness remains and you can adjust it in the options. What changed is the default, not whether help exists. How far the assistance goes at its strongest setting hasn't been shown.
Reported The guns feel heavier too. In a police shootout on Shore Drive, GTA BOOM says Nelson's assault rifle had more recoil, sound and impact than its GTA 5 version, and he fired in short bursts to keep it under control. The same report says the Extended Look appears to show a faster pistol fire rate than GTA 5, though it hedges that one.
Reported Switching weapons is still quick: GTA BOOM says quick weapon swapping returns. Reported When an enemy drops a gun, the Extended Look shows a pickup prompt with the weapon's name on it, according to AllThingsHow. Our read: the trunk holds the plan, quick swap handles the fight, and dropped guns are your backup when the plan falls apart.
Focus: GTA's answer to Dead Eye
Official Focus is GTA 6's new awareness tool. IGN says it highlights things of interest in the world, and Nelson describes it as very similar to Red Dead Redemption 2's Eagle Eye. In IGN's demo it made a nearby police officer glow.
Reported In combat it does more. GTA BOOM says activating Focus slows the action and highlights lethal areas on an enemy in red and spots that incapacitate in yellow. GTABase adds that Focus is a limited meter on the HUD and can pick out vehicle parts such as the engine block, fuel tank and tires. Rockstar hasn't explained how the meter refills, how long it lasts or whether it can be upgraded.
Reported Focus matters more because enemies and police no longer show up on the radar or minimap, according to GTA BOOM. Our read: Rockstar is moving information off the corner of the screen and into the world, so you read the fight instead of the minimap. The wanted system explainer covers how that plays out with the police.

You don't have to kill everybody
GTA 5 gave you two outcomes: you hit someone, or you killed them. GTA 6 adds a middle ground.
Official IGN reports that in a shootout you can aim for an arm or a leg to put an enemy down non-lethally, or, if you're accurate enough, shoot the weapon out of their hand. In The Big Interview, Nelson walked IGN through a fight where nobody died: the people knocked down got up and walked away. He also explained the on-screen marker:
that yellow X means that NPC is incapacitated, so he won't get back up
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to IGN
Reported GTA BOOM lists three hit-marker colors: white for a normal hit, yellow for an incapacitation and red for a kill. Reported Nelson told Famitsu that suppressive fire can help you escape without killing anyone. Official And some fights don't need a shot at all: IGN reports that aiming a gun without firing can make an NPC flee, and Nelson says you can threaten someone into backing down, knock them out, or shoot to incapacitate.
Where the Criminal Profile comes in
Official The new Criminal Profile tracks what sort of criminal you are. IGN reports that crimes a mission or robbery requires, or self-defence, won't necessarily shift it, while unnecessary violence and causing more mayhem than called for can. Nelson stresses there's no right or wrong way to play. Our Criminal Profile explainer goes deeper.
Our read: non-lethal shots and a system that watches for unnecessary escalation look designed to work together. Rockstar hasn't said that incapacitating someone counts in your favor, so don't assume it does. Official Some escalation is unavoidable by design, IGN notes, including in some story missions.
Cover, movement and cinematic kills
Reported GTA BOOM says cover sits on R1, crouching now lets you keep moving and strafing, and shoulder switching returns, so you can swap the camera side while aiming around cover. Our read: crouch movement fills the gap between GTA 5's sticky cover and standing in the open.
Official IGN reports that particularly impressive moments of violence get a slow-motion replay from a cinematic camera angle, much like Arthur's best shots in Red Dead Redemption 2. Reported GTA BOOM says these kill cams can be turned off.
Vehicle combat and fighting as a pair
Official Jason and Lucia fight as a team. IGN reports that during chases one can sit in the passenger seat and shoot while the other drives, and you can switch seats. In The Big Interview, Nelson described his partner driving while he shot from behind: blow out a tire and the lead police car flips and blocks the rest. Our read: as on foot, where you shoot now matters more than how many bullets you fire.
Official If Jason gets into a fight, Nelson says Lucia "definitely" joins in. Switching between them stays as open as possible, but IGN reports it may be disabled at certain points in the story. How boats, jet skis and helicopters fit into combat hasn't been shown in detail yet.
Melee finally has defense
Reported Hand-to-hand gets real defensive moves. Nelson told TGG there's a held block and a timed parry, according to GTA BOOM, and the Extended Look shows Lucia blocking a strike before fighting back. When Lucia incapacitates someone with her fists, the screen edge flashes yellow.
Reported Jason and Lucia reportedly fight differently. Italian creator MikeShowSha, who attended a Rockstar North presentation, says Lucia is a technical fighter built on kickboxing and mixed martial arts, while Jason relies on brute strength, as reported by Notebookcheck. Official That fits Rockstar's own character material: Lucia's father trained her to fight, and Nelson told IGN she fights in heels too. Whether the styles can be trained, for example at the gym, is unknown. See our characters guide for more on both leads.
Bodies that react like bodies
Reported The New York Times reported that GTA 6 has well over 600,000 animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5 and about 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2, as cited by Notebookcheck. Official Nelson told IGN that animations now retarget on the fly to fit NPCs' very different heights and body shapes, including in fights. That isn't 600,000 combat animations, but it's a much bigger vocabulary for people reacting believably when they're hit.
Every named GTA 6 weapon so far
Rockstar hasn't published a weapon list. Fans have matched many guns in the footage to real-world models, but a real-world model isn't a GTA 6 name. Here's what has actually been named.
| Weapon | Type | Where it comes from | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moreland 850 | Shotgun | Pickup prompt in the Extended Look | Reported AllThingsHow |
| Hawk & Little Morgan | His-and-hers revolvers with a scope | Ultimate Edition | Official |
| Girardi ES9 (personalized) | Jason's pistol, engraved | Ultimate Edition | Official |
| Klose K17 (personalized) | Lucia's pistol, engraved | Ultimate Edition | Official |
| "Channel the Original Kingpin" | Tropical weapon pattern for most guns | Vintage Vice City Pack (pre-order) | Official |
Official Rockstar says the Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers carry Vice City styling from the Vercetti Estate, with palm-tree-etched grips, engraving and a high-performance scope. Our read: that's a nod to Tommy Vercetti, not proof that his mansion is a place you can visit. Full details are in our editions guide.

Reported GTA BOOM notes engraved, painted and gold-finished guns in the footage, which points to plenty of cosmetic customization. How deep functional upgrades go, such as scopes, suppressors, magazines or ammo types, Rockstar hasn't shown.
Our take: the gun is a real object now
GTA 5's combat mostly asked one question: how much firepower do you have? GTA 6 asks several before you pull the trigger. What did you bring, and what did you leave in the trunk? Is the gun hidden, and who saw it? Do you want this person dead, or just the gun out of their hand? And how much violence will you use when the job doesn't need it?
Our verdict: the guns being more realistic isn't the big story. The big story is that Rockstar treats the gun as an object in the world. You carry it, people see it, your partner can take it, and the game cares where the bullet lands. The biggest open questions are how strong the aim assist can be set, what heavy weapons such as rocket launchers look like under the 2+2 rule, and how much of the story you can play without killing. We'll find out on November 19, 2026. Until then, the release date hub has everything about launch.
FAQ
How many guns can you carry in GTA 6?
Reported Two concealed handguns at all times, plus two long guns that stay visible: one on your back and one in your hands. Official Every weapon you've bought is kept in the back of your personal vehicle, which you can call at any time.
Does GTA 6 have auto aim?
Reported Not by default. According to TGG's preview, reported by GTA BOOM, the default leans toward free aim with less lock-on than earlier GTA games. Some aim stickiness remains, and you can adjust it in the options.
Can you play GTA 6 without killing people?
Official Partly. You can incapacitate enemies with arm or leg shots, shoot guns out of their hands, or scare people off by aiming without firing. But IGN notes that some escalation is unavoidable by design, including in some story missions, so a fully non-lethal run hasn't been confirmed.
Is there a weapon wheel in GTA 6?
Rockstar hasn't shown the full weapon menu. Reported GTA BOOM says quick weapon swapping returns, but with only two handguns and two long guns on you, the rest of your arsenal stays in your personal vehicle.
What does Focus do in GTA 6?
Official Focus highlights things of interest, including police, and Nelson compares it to Red Dead Redemption 2's Eagle Eye. Reported In combat it reportedly slows time and marks lethal areas in red and incapacitating spots in yellow. How it recharges hasn't been revealed.
What weapons are confirmed for GTA 6?
Official Rockstar has named the Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers and personalized versions of Jason's Girardi ES9 and Lucia's Klose K17, all in the Ultimate Edition. Reported A Moreland 850 shotgun appears on a pickup prompt in the Extended Look. Pistols, rifles, shotguns and more appear in official footage without official names yet.
