Game Informer's GTA 6 cover story (issue 382) draws on interviews with 5 senior Rockstar Games developers and explains how many of Grand Theft Auto VI's new systems work. The biggest reveals are a police Heat system, harder car theft, income-gated missions, localized weather with hurricanes, 170+ animal species and a map about twice the size of GTA V's.

Who Game Informer talked to, and why Florida

The 14-page feature, Grand Theft Auto VI – Welcome to Leonida, ran on September 29, 2026. Its writer, senior associate editor Marcus Stewart, is a lifelong South Floridian who measures Leonida against the real state, and he says this is the first Vice City that feels familiar.

Asked why Florida makes such a good Grand Theft Auto playground, Garbut kept it short:

America dialed up to 11.

Aaron Garbut, Rockstar Games, to Game Informer

He told the magazine that Florida's glamour and excess, right beside hardship and grit, suit a crime story, and that expectations for this game are beyond anything the team has faced. Humphries said Rockstar spent years on research trips to Miami and South Florida, riding around at night with ex-cops and visiting nightclubs, beaches, the Everglades and the Keys.

Heists, money and the new Heat system

Jason and Lucia are robbers, and Game Informer says they spend much of the game pulling off heists and escaping the law.

Robberies, stealth and missions

You can rob places alone or as a duo, and working together strengthens Jason and Lucia's relationship. Jobs can go loud and fast or quiet and thorough, and how far you escalate decides whether the police respond at all, and how hard. That quiet approach is as close as the cover story gets to stealth: it doesn't describe sneaking mechanics.

Official Money matters more than ever, because some missions only become available once your income reaches a certain level. Our read: expect to build up cash before you can take on every job.

6-star wanted levels and the Heat system

Official 6-star wanted levels return, and a new Heat system sits on top of them: police gather information from reported incidents about what you looked like and where you were. To shake them, change your hairstyle and clothes (sold at Leonida's many stores and salons) and ditch your getaway vehicle, which helps you avoid a thorough, potentially lethal police response.

Splitting up and getting Busted

If the police know they're chasing a pair, Jason and Lucia can split up to divide their attention. But if either one is arrested, you get the Busted screen, even if the other got away. Reported Game Informer adds that Vice City's congested roads make police chases harder.

Jason and Lucia: switching and the relationship system

Switching between Jason and Lucia

As in GTA V, you can switch between the two at almost any time. Because they work as a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style robbery team, the other one is usually beside you on missions. Rockstar's setup is a simple score that goes wrong, forcing them to unravel a bigger criminal conspiracy across Vice City and Leonida.

Official Rockstar has also said that player decisions, big and small, significantly change the story's direction, enough to encourage multiple playthroughs. There's more on the story in our LOVE magazine interview breakdown.

Friends or a couple

You can't break them up, and they'll always have each other's backs, but story and optional choices decide whether they stay friends or become a romantic couple. Romance takes work: besides missions together, the bond grows when they hold hands, open doors for each other, call, answer calls and texts promptly and regularly, and accept each other's invitations to do things together.

Official Rockstar stresses that it's optional. Being a couple gives no gameplay advantage over being friends, so it's mostly a role-playing choice, but certain parts of the story react to the strength of their bond. Our GTA 6 characters guide covers the rest of the cast.

Stealing cars, the phone and getting around

Car theft and the WAiNK app

Rockstar had already said that stealing cars, the series' namesake crime, takes more work in GTA 6. Depending on the vehicle, you might take it the old-fashioned way or need specialized tools, and expensive cars can have sophisticated security systems and even trackers.

Official A new phone app called WAiNK scans a car to reveal those features, what it would cost to register it as your own and roughly what a fence would pay. The cover story doesn't list vehicles or cover fuel, damage or flying.

Phone apps, texts and social media

Your phone does a lot of work. Besides WAiNK, it runs RydeMe and carries the calls and texts that build Jason and Lucia's relationship. You can also doomscroll: the pair won't post, since they're wanted criminals, but they can lurk on social media, including Snapmatic, the returning Instagram parody.

Satellite map, RydeMe fast travel and radio

The in-game map has been improved to look like satellite imagery, to help you navigate a world this big. For fast travel, the RydeMe ride-share app gets you places quickly, and on shared rides you can chat with other passengers. If you drive, the radio has new licensed songs and plenty of comedic ads, though no stations or tracks were named.

The map: twice GTA V's size, with far more interiors

Official Garbut told Game Informer that Leonida is the biggest map Rockstar has ever made, by a wide margin: roughly twice the size of GTA V's, and denser, more detailed and more interactive. Vice City is the centerpiece, rebuilt, expanded and moved to the present day, but Humphries says the game is about the whole state, and part of the story's job is to take you around it.

Interiors and enterable buildings

The team obsessed over rooftops, alleys and interiors, Garbut said, and built so many interiors that it hit a critical mass where buildings feel real inside and out. He didn't give a number of enterable buildings.

The 6 regions of Leonida

RegionWhat the cover story says
Vice CityRockstar's Miami: deco architecture, beaches, a cruise ship port and congested roads
Leonida KeysRockstar's Florida Keys, where Jason works for drug runners as the game opens
GrassriversLeonida's Everglades: a vast wetland with reptilian predators and probably armed locals
Port GellhornStruggling tourist towns: abandoned attractions, cheap motels, run-down strip malls
AmbrosiaThe heart of Leonida, per Rockstar: factories, refineries and a biker gang in charge
Mount Kalaga National ParkWildlife and natural wonders on the northern border, with the culture of the Leonida-Gloriana line (the real Florida-Georgia line)

Northern Leonida, Orlando and the Space Coast

For the north, MacPherson says the team studied Panama City, Jacksonville, Ocala and the small towns in between, and was drawn to the lumber industry, deforested zones and gated communities built around private jets and their own landing strips.

Official Asked about Orlando's theme parks and the Space Coast, MacPherson said the team weighs everything from landscapes and landmarks to plants and rock formations, then keeps what serves the game. Those exact places may not appear, but everything that made it in aims at the full Florida experience. Our GTA 6 map guide goes region by region.

Weather: localized rain, wind and hurricanes

Florida gets hammered by thunderstorms, and Shepherd told Game Informer the team set out to capture that violent weather while expanding GTA's weather system as a whole:

We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent.

Owen Shepherd, Rockstar Games, to Game Informer
  • Clouds: fully dynamic cloudscapes roll across the map, from clear Miami-winter skies to towering thunderclouds with lightning.
  • Localized rain: you can stand in sunshine while a storm batters an area nearby.
  • After the rain: the right light makes realistic rainbows, and puddles persist after a storm passes.
  • Wind: offshore breezes after sunset, rising updrafts and buildings that block the wind, with debris swirling on rooftops and swamp grass bending.

Official Leonida also gets tropical storms and hurricanes. Shepherd didn't say how often they strike or how they affect gameplay or the story, but he described heavy clouds, strong winds and so much rain that water pours off roofs and lampposts as thunder rumbles and lightning flashes.

Wildlife: 170+ species and animals to track

Official GTA 6 has more than 170 animal species, including over 60 types of birds and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish, reptiles and more, some of them Leonida natives never seen in a Rockstar game. Kane specifically confirmed manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators.

Invasive species made the cut too: green iguanas, feral cats, cane toads, nine-banded armadillos and rhesus macaque monkeys. Scuba divers will meet several shark species, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish, each moving in its own way.

The tech builds on Red Dead Redemption: animals can show iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency and different feather types, and new fur systems simulate fur that mats with dirt, clumps, gets wet and varies by coat and color.

Official Like Red Dead, GTA 6 has animals to track, sorted into Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. Rockstar won't name them, because it wants you to discover them while exploring. Hunting wasn't detailed.

NPCs, clothing and side activities

How Leonida's people look, talk and react

Game Informer calls Leonida's often bizarre residents its most important ingredient. Rockstar has a Los Angeles team dedicated purely to writing NPC chatter, and its writers studied dialects in Miami and rural Florida. On how NPCs react to you, the cover story's main detail is the Heat system, which works from reported incidents.

NPCs now vary in height and body type, including musculature and where they carry weight, with freckles, moles and tan lines on their skin. Kane says Rockstar paid close attention to culturally accurate tattoo styles for Leonida's communities and regions, and hair and grooming cover far more ethnic styles.

Clothing and hair

Official Kane says Rockstar built its biggest range of clothes and accessories ever. Colors, patterns and brands fit each area, while wear, dirt and fit reflect each person's social situation, down to sneakers, watches, sunglasses and hats. For Jason and Lucia, clothes and haircuts come from many distinct stores and salons, and changing them helps you shake the Heat.

Side activities and gyms

When they're not robbing places, Jason and Lucia can blow off steam, and some activities build their relationship. Confirmed so far: base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, zoos, airboating and jet skiing.

Up north, MacPherson adds ATV trails, a rowdy mud-park party, nighttime demolition derbies, mountain biking, ranches, a private golf course, MX bikes on the dunes and bass fishing. Gyms suit Lucia, whose father trained her to fight, but the cover story doesn't say whether working out changes anyone's body or stats.

What the cover story doesn't cover

Several big questions weren't part of Game Informer's feature: weapons and combat, first-person mode, death and respawning, safehouses and buying property, vehicle lists, fuel and damage, flying, cheat codes and mods. The only arrest detail is the shared Busted screen. On housing, the only related detail is that Brian Heder, a veteran drug runner and one of the main mission givers, lets Jason live rent-free in one of his properties in exchange for criminal work.

Our take: a GTA that remembers

Our read: the common thread in this cover story is consequence. Police that note your appearance, cars that can be tracked, missions gated by income, rain that leaves puddles and a relationship that grows when you answer your partner's calls all point to a world that remembers what you did. That fits Garbut's claim that Rockstar refused its usual trade-offs, where scale costs detail or detail costs interaction, and turned everything up at once.

The risk is friction. Every extra step, from scanning a car to changing clothes after a robbery, has to stay fun rather than feel like a chore. And the biggest unknowns are still open: how often hurricanes hit, how long Heat lasts and how much income the gated missions need. Those answers arrive on November 19, 2026.

FAQ

What is the Heat system in GTA 6?

It's a new police layer on top of the returning 6-star wanted levels. Police gather information from reported incidents about what you looked like and where you were, so changing your clothes and hairstyle and ditching your getaway vehicle helps you shake them.

How big is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?

Rockstar's Aaron Garbut told Game Informer that Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA V's map, making it the biggest Rockstar has made. He says it's also denser, more detailed and more interactive.

Does GTA 6 have hurricanes?

Yes. Rockstar confirmed tropical storms and hurricanes, alongside localized rain and lingering puddles. It hasn't said how often they hit or how they affect gameplay and the story.

Can Jason and Lucia become a couple in GTA 6?

Yes. You can't break them up, but story choices and small interactions, like answering calls and texts or holding hands, decide whether they stay friends or become a couple. There's no gameplay advantage either way, though parts of the story react to their bond.

How many animals are in GTA 6?

More than 170 species, including over 60 types of birds and more than 30 land mammals. Confirmed animals include manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators, and you can track Rare, Discoverable and Legendary animals.

When does GTA 6 come out?

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our release date guide has the details, and the GTA 6 countdown ticks down to launch.
