The only thing Rockstar has said about interior scale
Official, on the record. In July 2026 the French outlet TROISCOULEURS spent an afternoon at Rockstar North in Edinburgh watching Rob Nelson play GTA 6, and published the preview and interview on August 27, 2026 — the same day as the Extended Look. Having seen the scale of Vice City, they asked the obvious follow-up: and what about the buildings?
"You can enter a lot of buildings, a lot, a huge number."
— Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar Games, to TROISCOULEURS, published August 27, 2026
That is the complete official record on interior quantity. He did not give a count, a percentage, or a comparison to GTA 5. The repetition in the sentence — "a lot, a huge number" — is the most emphatic thing anyone at Rockstar has said on the subject, and it is still a feeling rather than a fact you can check.
Which is awkward, because "how many buildings can you enter in GTA 6" is a question with a very specific-sounding answer sitting at the top of search results. That answer did not come from this interview, or from any other Rockstar source.
Every interior in official GTA 6 material
Official footage. What can be verified is which interiors Rockstar has actually published. This is the complete list across both trailers, the official screenshots, the roughly 26-minute Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, and the TROISCOULEURS preview of the Rockstar North demo.
| Interior | Where it appeared | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| An apartment complex — corridors, rooms, stairways, an elevator | An Extended Look opening, Aug 27, 2026 | The big one. A multi-level interior used as a full mission space, not a single room. |
| Convenience store and gas station counters | An Extended Look; also described in the TROISCOULEURS demo | Small shops are enterable and robbable — the base of the robbery ladder. |
| A diner | An Extended Look | A sit-down interior with staff and customers, used for a hold-up. |
| A bank lobby and vault | Trailer 2, May 6, 2025 | The largest commercial interior shown, and the one with a set-piece attached. |
| Jason's home, with a working television playing parody ads | An Extended Look; the preview describes the couple getting ready for dinner there | Safehouse interiors are lived-in spaces. See our safehouses guide. |
| A nightclub and a strip club | An Extended Look | Entertainment interiors with crowds, tied to Dre'Quan Priest's storyline. |
| A gym, with a bench-press minigame | An Extended Look | An interior you pay to use — the gym and body system. |
| A hairdresser and a conference room | TROISCOULEURS preview of the Rockstar North demo | Both are new categories: a grooming business and a corporate space. |
| A grow house | Official screenshots (Port Gellhorn) | Criminal interiors exist as published locations, not just mission rooms. |
| A prison interior, including a gym | Trailer 2 and official media | Lucia's opening takes place inside an institution, wall to wall. |

Analysis. Read honestly, that table is a floor, not a total. Roughly a dozen distinct interiors across three years of marketing tells you the categories Rockstar is building — shops, homes, clubs, institutions, criminal spaces, service businesses — and tells you nothing whatsoever about how many of each exist in Leonida. A game can show ten interiors and ship forty, or show ten and ship four hundred. Anyone converting this footage into a number is doing arithmetic on evidence that does not support arithmetic.
The apartment raid is the interior that actually matters
Official footage, then analysis. If you only look at one thing on this page, look at how the Extended Look opens. Jason and Lucia go into a drug den to collect a pickup for Boobie Ike, the deal goes wrong, and police raid the building. The escape runs through the apartment complex itself — twisting hallways, rooms, stairways — with a firefight the whole way, ending in an elevator. GameRant and other showcase breakdowns singled the sequence out for exactly this reason.
That matters more than any count, because it changes what an interior is in a GTA game. In GTA 5 an interior was typically one room you walked into and out of: a counter to rob, a shop to buy from, a safehouse to save in. The apartment sequence is a building used the way a level is used — multiple floors, sightlines, cover, an enemy force entering from outside, a route out. Our combat breakdown covers the gunplay in it; the point here is architectural.
A count tells you how many doors open. This sequence tells you what is behind one of them.
— analysis, not a Rockstar statement
It is also the single strongest argument for taking Nelson's "huge number" seriously while still refusing to put a figure on it. Interiors that hold a running gunfight are expensive to build. A studio that builds one like this is clearly investing in interior space — and is also unlikely to be making hundreds of them to the same standard.
Where "700 interiors" actually comes from
Rumor, labeled. Here is the full chain, because almost nobody publishing the number shows it.
- Origin: a Discord account called GameRoll, relaying a claim from an unnamed source.
- First report: The Game Post, in June 2025 — more than a year before any gameplay footage existed.
- The actual claim: GTA 6 contains more than 700 locations categorised as "stores", which GameRoll described as shops you can rob, alongside explorable multi-floor malls and skyscrapers with working elevators.
- The disclaimer, in GameRoll's own words: "I have no proof of any of this information."
- The gap nobody closed: GameRoll reportedly did not know how the source defined a shop. Without that definition, the number cannot be checked even in principle.
Then watch what happened to it. Coverage of the leak carried headlines using the word confirms about an unproven Discord post. "700 robbable stores" became "700 enterable buildings," which became "700+ interiors," which became pages titled as complete guides to all 700-plus enterable buildings in a game nobody has played. A second version grew additional precision along the way — roughly 40% of large buildings enterable, every small shop enterable, physics destruction throughout — none of which traces back to a named source at all.
This is the same mutation we have documented in the "every confirmed weapon" lists, the radio station lineups and the three-endings pages: one unverified claim, amplified until the hedges fall off, ending as a table. The tell is always specificity with no source attached.
Why this number is harder to dismiss than most
Credible report, and an honest complication. We are not going to pretend GameRoll is a random account. After the Extended Look aired, Kotaku went back through old GTA 6 leaks on September 2, 2026 and found a real hit rate — including the return of the six-star wanted level, Red Dead-style greet and antagonise options for NPCs, Jason's ability to slow down time, gore and dismemberment, gaining and losing weight, and a chapter structure like Red Dead Redemption 2. GameRoll had also correctly leaked Jason and Lucia's surnames before Rockstar announced them.
And one element of the interiors cluster specifically got an echo: working elevators. The Extended Look shows an elevator used during the apartment escape, and the TROISCOULEURS demo included an elevator ride too.
So the uncomfortable, accurate position is this: a leaker with a good record is still not a source for a number. The same Kotaku retrospective lists claims from the leak era that did not bear out — a map of three large islands, and a version of the interiors claim running past 1,000 enterable locations. Track records predict nothing reliably at the level of individual figures, and a figure whose own originator disclaimed proof and could not define its unit is the weakest possible thing to build a guide on. "Lots of interiors, probably many robbable shops" is supported. "700" is not a fact; it is a number that survived retelling.
What "enterable" even meant in GTA 5
Analysis. One reason these comparisons go wrong is that the word is doing several jobs at once. In GTA 5, the overwhelming majority of buildings in Los Santos were solid shells. What you could enter fell into a few buckets: shops with a counter and little else, safehouses, mission-specific interiors that only opened during a mission, and a small number of genuinely explorable buildings.
So a claim like "40% of buildings are enterable" is not just unsourced, it is unanswerable without knowing which bucket is being counted. A convenience store you can rob, an apartment you can live in, and a multi-floor complex you can fight through are three completely different amounts of development work that all pass as "an interior." When Nelson says you can enter a huge number of buildings, he is not resolving that ambiguity either — which is precisely why the honest version of this page is a list of what has been shown rather than a total.
If you want the spatial context instead, our Leonida map guide covers the regions those buildings sit in, and the map size comparison handles the one scale figure Rockstar has actually given.
What would settle this
- Rockstar publishing a number. A Newswire post or interview with an actual interior count would end the argument in one sentence. Three years of marketing have not produced one.
- A mall interior on screen. Explorable malls are the most testable part of the leak. No mall interior has appeared in any official video or screenshot yet.
- Hands-on previews. Everything so far is hands-off — journalists watching a developer play. The first writer who can walk into a random building and report what happens will answer this properly.
- Launch itself. On November 19, 2026, this becomes a question anyone can check, and the "700+" pages will either be vindicated or quietly edited.
Until then, the accurate summary is short: a Rockstar developer says the number of enterable buildings is huge, roughly a dozen interiors have been shown and they span an unusually wide range of categories, the most impressive of them is a multi-floor apartment complex used as a combat space, and no count exists. The Extended Look breakdown covers everything else the showcase confirmed, and our rumor policy explains why we will not print the number as a fact before launch.
Frequently asked questions
- How many buildings can you enter in GTA 6?
- Nobody outside Rockstar knows a number. The only figure Rockstar has offered is a phrase: asked about buildings during a hands-off preview at Rockstar North, head of development Rob Nelson said "You can enter a lot of buildings, a lot, a huge number." He gave no count and no percentage. Roughly a dozen distinct interiors have appeared in official GTA 6 material so far, which is a floor rather than a total. Any page printing a specific number is not quoting Rockstar.
- Does GTA 6 really have 700 enterable buildings?
- That figure is not from Rockstar. It traces to a Discord account called GameRoll, reported by The Game Post in June 2025, and the original claim was narrower than the version that spread: more than 700 locations categorised as stores, not 700 interiors. GameRoll also said plainly, "I have no proof of any of this information," and reportedly did not know how the source defined a shop. Rockstar has published no interior count at all, so the pages offering a guide to all 700-plus enterable buildings are cataloguing something nobody has seen.
- Which GTA 6 interiors have actually been shown?
- The clearest one is the opening of Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, where a drug pickup for Boobie Ike goes wrong and Jason and Lucia fight out through an apartment complex of corridors, rooms and stairways before escaping by elevator. Official material also shows convenience store and gas station counters, a diner, a bank lobby and vault, a nightclub, a strip club, a gym, a grow house, a prison interior and Jason's home with a working television. The TROISCOULEURS preview additionally describes a hairdresser and a conference room.
- Can you enter shopping malls in GTA 6?
- No mall interior has appeared in any official GTA 6 video, screenshot or statement. Fully explorable multi-floor malls come from the same June 2025 Discord leak as the 700 figure, alongside skyscrapers with working elevators. One detail in that cluster does now have an on-record echo, since the Extended Look shows an elevator used during the apartment escape, but an elevator in one building is not a mall. Treat mall interiors as unconfirmed until Rockstar shows one.
- Will GTA 6 have loading screens when you enter buildings?
- Rockstar has not addressed it. No developer statement describes how interior transitions are handled, and the published footage is an edited presentation, so it cannot be used to prove that doorways load seamlessly. What the Extended Look does show is an interior large enough to hold a running gunfight across multiple floors, which is a different and more interesting claim than the absence of a loading screen.
Source note: Rob Nelson's quote about enterable buildings, the hairdresser, the conference room, the elevator and Jason's apartment come from the TROISCOULEURS preview and interview published August 27, 2026, based on a July 2026 visit to Rockstar North. The Extended Look itself is documented on the Rockstar Newswire; the drug-den apartment escape, the interior corridors and stairways, and the wrestling and club scenes are described in showcase breakdowns by GameRant and Game Informer. The 700-stores claim originates with the Discord account GameRoll via The Game Post and was covered in June 2025 by outlets including GamingBible; the "I have no proof of any of this information" disclaimer and the undefined meaning of "shop" are reported in that coverage. The leak retrospective is Kotaku, September 2, 2026. We do not treat material from the September 2022 breach as evidence for what the shipping game contains, and we do not link to it. Rockstar Games has never published an interior count, a percentage of enterable buildings, or any statement about mall interiors; where this page says "no evidence," that is why.
