The biggest difference between GTA 6 and GTA 5 isn't the map or the graphics. It's that almost everything you do between missions now feeds back into the game. The gym changes your body, food changes your weight and health, time with your partner shapes the story, stolen cars have to be scanned and registered, and some story missions won't start until you've earned enough money. Below is every confirmed new feature, sorted by system, with where each fact comes from.
The world: bigger, denser, and it reacts to you
Official Rockstar co-studio head Aaron Garbut told Game Informer that Leonida is the biggest map Rockstar has ever made: roughly twice the size of GTA V's, and denser, more detailed and more interactive. Our Leonida map guide walks through all 6 regions and what "twice the size" really means. Official The pause map now uses detailed satellite imagery instead of GTA 5's flat street plan.
The bigger change is how the world treats you. Official In older GTAs, Rob Nelson of Rockstar North told IGN, you were "a bit all-powerful": the only person with a hidden arsenal, and everyone but the police ran. In GTA 6, other people carry weapons, gangs may start fights, and NPCs notice if you stand too close, eavesdrop or follow them too long.
The world will act upon you as well as you acting upon the world.
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to IGN
Official You can talk to almost anyone with an interaction system evolved from Red Dead Redemption 2: target someone with your gun holstered to greet or taunt them, or to defuse or provoke a confrontation. Official Random encounters aren't always marked on the map, and Nelson says a lot of the game is found by exploring rather than following icons. In IGN's demo, a man sitting in a dumpster asked for pills and later turned out to give legal advice.
Official NPCs vary far more in height and body shape than in any earlier Rockstar game, with animations adjusted on the fly so they fit each body. Official Game Informer adds weather that falls on specific parts of the map instead of everywhere at once, hurricanes, and more than 170 animal species.

Your body: gyms, food and grooming
GTA 5 had no body stats at all. GTA 6 brings them back. Official Going to the gym increases Jason's or Lucia's muscularity and strength, and if you overeat, Nelson says, they put on weight. Eating also gives a big health boost. Reported IGN calls it the first time since San Andreas that weight and muscle are back, and reported seeing stats like sleep and calories in a menu during the demo.
Official Take both characters to the gym and they both train, which Nelson calls "a 2-for-1" on their stats. Reported Famitsu's interview (in a fan translation) gives a routine: 3 exercises a day, 3 days in a row, to level up.
Official Grooming works more like Red Dead Redemption 2 too. At the safehouse you can only shorten or shave your hair; new styles need a salon or barber. Every salon and clothing store has standard stock plus signature items you can't buy anywhere else, so it pays to visit different ones. Our safehouses and things to do guide has the full list.
Jason and Lucia: two leads, one relationship
GTA 5's three leads lived separate lives. GTA 6's two live together. Official You can switch between Jason and Lucia at any time in the open world, though some story moments block it. You can also call or text the other to join you, and they keep their own routines when you're apart, so a switch might find them at the safehouse or out on their own.
Official The relationship is a system you manage. Nelson says the story starts them "wanting to give it a shot", but missions alone may not keep them together. You build it by spending time together: exploring, shopping, salons, the gym, pool, mini golf, kayaking, the zoo, scuba diving, parachuting and even robbing stores together. Ignore your partner's texts after a long day out and the relationship may take a hit.
Official You can hold hands with the right trigger and hold doors for each other. When you drive together, either one can take the wheel while the other shoots. Official Romance gives no gameplay bonus and you can opt out of it, but Nelson says whether you nurtured it "will definitely have a bearing" on how their story plays out. Reported Previews say they can break up and still work together as partners in crime. More in our relationship system explainer.
Official Your partner isn't a passenger either. If Jason gets into a fight, Nelson says, Lucia joins in, and both of them can suggest nearby jobs or activities while you're out, turning a drive into something else if you say yes.
Cars: grand theft auto, for real this time
In GTA 5, one button stole any parked car. Official In GTA 6 cars are tiered: older ones need a slim jim, modern prestige cars need a key cloner, and some stay out of reach until you get the tools later in the story. Carjacking a car with a driver in it still always works.
Official Before you touch a car, the WAiNK phone app scans it and shows whether it's locked, alarmed or tracked, what it's worth and what it costs to register as your own. Official Some cars carry advanced trackers that tell the police where you are if you drive too slowly. Stolen cars are worth less to a fence if they're damaged.
Official Each character can own several personal vehicles, kept at safehouses, with working trunks for weapons and a change of clothes. Nelson says every weapon you've bought is always in the back of your personal vehicle, and you can call that car to you at any time. Official Ryde Me, a rideshare app, doubles as fast travel. Reported Fuel is in, too: electric cars charge at service stations, and TGG says a fill-up takes about 10 seconds. Our car theft guide covers the tools.

Police and heat: six stars and a long memory
Official The six-star wanted level returns after GTA 5 cut it to five. One star is meant to be easy to escape; six is classic, high-chaos GTA. Official A crime only gets reported if someone sees it or an alarm goes off, and Rockstar's design encourages hit-and-run: get in and out before the police arrive.
Official Once you're wanted, dispatch can learn what you look like, what you're wearing, what you're driving and whether they're after a couple, shown as icons under your stars. A new haircut changes your face, but the police still know your outfit; glasses or a hat aren't enough, so you need a whole new outfit. Masks during a crime can stop your description reaching the police at all. Hollow white stars mean they don't know who you are. Official The area of the crime stays marked as a "hot area" on the map while officers keep searching.
Official At three stars and up, narrow streets and dense traffic make escaping by car in the city hard unless it's very fast, so Nelson's advice is to get off the streets on foot. Reported Previews also say police and enemies don't appear on the minimap any more; Official Focus, which Nelson compares to Red Dead's Eagle Eye, highlights things of interest, cops included. Our wanted system explainer goes deeper.
Money, robberies and the Criminal Profile
Official Nelson says Rockstar has made money matter more in this story: sometimes you'll need to raise a set amount before the main missions continue. That's closer to 2002's Vice City, where buying businesses opened new missions, than to GTA 5, where cash piled up with little to spend it on.
Official You can rob "pretty much anything", Nelson says, from a shop that sells headphones to payday loan places and banks, alone or as a couple. Every job is a choice between speed and greed: blowing a safe is faster but damages some of the loot, while finding the combination pays more but gives the police time to gather outside. Stolen goods go to fences, Red Dead style, for jewelry and for cars. Reported GTA 6 also separates your bank balance from the cash you carry, which you lose if you're killed. The full loop is in our robberies and money guide.
Official The Criminal Profile tracks what sort of criminal you are. Crimes a mission needs, robberies and self-defence are fair game; going beyond what's needed, again and again, shifts it, and it can change how the world reacts and how the story plays out. It isn't Red Dead's Honor system: Nelson says there's no right or wrong way to play. Official In fights you can also incapacitate people by aiming for an arm or leg, or shoot the gun out of their hand. See our Criminal Profile explainer.

Things to do: the activities list
GTA 5 had golf, tennis, darts and triathlons, but few of them connected to anything. GTA 6's confirmed activities so far:
| Activity | Source | What's new about it |
|---|---|---|
| Gym | Nelson to IGN; Game Informer | Builds muscle and strength; counts as time together |
| Pool (billiards) | Nelson to IGN; Game Informer | Builds the relationship |
| Mini golf | Nelson to IGN; Game Informer | Builds the relationship |
| Kayaking | Nelson to IGN; Game Informer | Builds the relationship |
| Scuba diving | Nelson to IGN; Game Informer | Counts as time together |
| Parachuting / base jumping | Nelson to IGN; Game Informer | Counts as time together |
| The zoo and studying animals | Nelson to IGN | Each species you study is checked off a list, RDR2 style |
| Street and off-road racing | Game Informer | |
| Airboating and jet skiing | Game Informer | Built for a state that's mostly water |
| Fishing and hunting | Nelson to TGG, via Beebom (reported) | Caught fish can't be kept; hunting is the earner |
Official You can also pet dogs (or scold them), browse Snapmatic and follow accounts, though you can't post because Jason and Lucia are a couple on the run. Official There are more radio and TV ads than in any GTA before, and the phone is now a physical object in your character's hand instead of a pop-up.
Official Most importantly, a lot isn't on any list. Nelson told IGN that GTA 6 has the "just existing" side of Red Dead Redemption 2.
That's essentially what GTA 6 has as well – you can just exist.
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to IGN

Our take: is GTA 6 better than GTA 5?
Our read: GTA 6's real upgrade is connection. GTA 5's side activities were things you tried once; in GTA 6, the gym, food, salons, your car and your partner all feed back into stats, heat, money or the story. The trade-off is upkeep. Fuel, registration fees, outfit changes and a partner who wants a reply could feel like chores after 30 hours, and Rockstar hasn't said whether any of it can be switched off. Still, Nelson says he sometimes plays it "wild and chaotic", one star is meant to be easy to lose, and nothing here stops you treating Leonida like classic GTA. For everything Nelson revealed in his longest interview, read our IGN interview breakdown.
What we don't know yet: whether golf, tennis or darts return, whether you can buy property or businesses, and how long the full activity list is. Check the release date hub for the latest, or count down on the GTA 6 countdown.
FAQ
What are the biggest differences between GTA 6 and GTA 5?
Official Two leads in a relationship instead of three separate ones, a map about twice GTA V's size, body stats (muscle, weight, health from food), tiered car theft with the WAiNK app, a six-star heat system where police learn your look, outfit and car, and story missions that sometimes need you to earn money first.
Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5?
Official Yes. Rockstar's Aaron Garbut told Game Informer that Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA V's map and Rockstar's biggest ever, as well as denser and more interactive. Rockstar hasn't given a figure in square miles.
Can you get fat or muscular in GTA 6?
Official Yes. The gym raises muscularity and strength, and overeating makes Jason or Lucia gain weight. Eating also gives a big health boost. Reported IGN calls it the first time since San Andreas that weight and muscle are back.
Can you switch characters in GTA 6 like GTA 5?
Official Yes, between Jason and Lucia, at any time in the open world, though switching may be blocked at certain story moments. You can also call or text the other to come to you.
What can you do in GTA 6 besides missions?
Official Gyms, salons, clothing stores, pool, mini golf, kayaking, scuba diving, parachuting, the zoo, studying animals, racing, airboating, jet skiing and robbing almost any store. Reported Fishing and hunting are in too.
When does GTA 6 come out?
Official November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. See our release date hub.
