GTA 6 at The Game Awards 2026: Is It Eligible for GOTY?

If the show keeps its usual calendar, GTA 6 beats the cutoff by a single day. The harder part: the jury normally picks its nominees before launch.

On paper, probably yes, but a Game of the Year nomination is far from guaranteed. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, and if The Game Awards keeps the calendar it used in 2024 and 2025, the game beats the eligibility cutoff by a single day. The catch is the jury, which usually fills in its nomination ballots in early to mid-November, before the game is out.

What The Game Awards' rules say

Official The rule itself is simple. Any game the public can get by the deadline is eligible, with no entry forms or fees. A game that arrives after the cutoff moves to the following year's show, and games from earlier years only come back if the jury decides new content or updates justify it.

What's missing is the 2026 deadline. As of October 5, the FAQ only says:

Eligibility dates for The Game Awards 2026 will be announced in Fall 2026.

The Game Awards FAQ

Neither Rockstar Games nor The Game Awards had commented on GTA 6's eligibility as of September 30, games.gg reported, and we found nothing newer. Until the dates are announced, every 2026 date below except the show is an estimate.

Past cutoffs, and where November 19 lands

The last two shows followed the same rhythm. The release cutoff fell on a Friday 20 days before the Thursday ceremony, and the nominees were revealed on the Monday before that cutoff.

Cutoffs, nominations and show dates are The Game Awards' own. Ballot dates come from Kotaku (2024) and past juror Alanah Pearce (2025); the 2026 estimates are our math.

Reported GameSpot reached the same conclusion in February, when the show date was announced: if the pattern holds, the cutoff is November 20 and GTA 6 qualifies. By our math, that's one day inside the window but three days after the nominees reveal. Our release date guide has the full launch details.

Why November 19 is so tight: the jury votes first

Official Fans don't choose the Game of the Year nominees. An international jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets does: each outlet files a confidential, unranked top-five ballot per category on behalf of its editorial team, and the five games on the most ballots are nominated. Winners are then decided 90% by the jury and 10% by the public vote.

Reported Those ballots are due long before the cutoff. Kotaku reported a November 12 deadline in 2024, with some outlets setting earlier internal ones. For 2025, games writer and streamer Alanah Pearce, who says she has served on the jury several times, described a first round on November 4, changes allowed until November 11, and a final vote on the nominees on November 24.

Reported That timing has hurt late releases before. Kotaku pointed out that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 launched on November 20, 2024, two days before that year's cutoff but after most jurors had already voted. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, out less than two weeks before the 2024 ballots were due, ended up with a single nomination, for accessibility.

Review copies are the real deadline

Reported A late launch doesn't automatically shut a game out. God of War Ragnarök came out on November 9, 2022, and still led the field with 10 nominations, including Game of the Year, when the nominees were revealed five days later. Critics had played it early: reviews went live on November 3, six days before launch.

Reported That's where GTA 6 gets complicated. For its last two blockbusters, Rockstar let reviews go live one day before release: GTA V on September 16, 2013, and Red Dead Redemption 2 on October 25, 2018. The same approach this time would put reviews around November 18, after the projected nominations (our read, not an announced date).

Rumor In May, Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe claimed on a podcast that Rockstar won't send review codes at all, and will instead have reviewers play for several days at a supervised location, Insider Gaming reported. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two commented.

Official Take-Two still cares about reviews: CEO Strauss Zelnick told The Game Business in May that critical reception matters as much as ever, without saying when they'll arrive. The Game Awards' FAQ also notes that publishers can request the list of voting outlets, so reaching jurors early is possible if Rockstar wants to.

What outlets and insiders are saying

Reported Screen Rant flagged the problem back in December 2025. Its view: GTA 6 should be eligible on paper, but its nominations will likely come down to whether critics have review code by early November.

Reported Pearce put it most bluntly in a stream clip posted on September 29. She doubts jurors can play GTA 6 properly before voting closes:

If they made it there at all, it would be indicative of a jury who voted for a game they didn't play.

Alanah Pearce, on her YouTube channel

She added that GTA 6 could still be nominated in other categories, that the show's schedule is too locked in to change, and that Rockstar doesn't need the award. Dexerto and others picked up her comments on September 30.

Reported GTA BOOM called the game's eligibility borderline, by a single day, with nomination voting usually in early or mid-November. Rumor games.gg floated two fixes, a later voting window or early access for jurors, but neither has been announced.

What it means for fans

Official Fan votes can't put GTA 6 on the Game of the Year shortlist: the jury picks those nominees, and fans only get 10% of the final say.

Official GTA 6 is already out of one awards race: the Golden Joystick Awards take place on November 11 in London, eight days before launch. Reported GTA BOOM expects it to be in the running at the D.I.C.E., Game Developers Choice and BAFTA Games Awards in 2027, which work to different calendars.

Dates to watch: the eligibility announcement promised for this fall, the nominees reveal expected in mid-November, and any word from Rockstar on reviews. Our GTA 6 countdown tracks the launch, while the characters guide and map guide cover what Rockstar has shown so far.

Our take: three ways this could go

Until the dates are official, we see three realistic outcomes:

  1. Cutoff on or after November 19, with early access for jurors. GTA 6 competes normally, judged on what outlets actually played.
  2. Cutoff on or after November 19, no early access. Most jurors vote before playing it, so it could miss the shortlist or get in on reputation alone, Pearce's exact worry. The rules wouldn't give it an automatic second shot in 2027.
  3. Cutoff before November 19. GTA 6 moves to next year's show, giving jurors a full year with it.

Our read: GTA 6 will most likely be eligible, and that's the easy part. The real test is whether jurors play it before they vote, which depends more on Rockstar's review plans than on The Game Awards. If reviews only arrive the day before launch, as with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, a 2026 nomination would mostly be a vote on trailers and reputation.

FAQ

Is GTA 6 eligible for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026?

Probably, but it isn't confirmed. The Game Awards hasn't announced its 2026 cutoff. If it follows the 2024 and 2025 pattern, the cutoff would be Friday, November 20, one day after GTA 6 launches.

When is The Game Awards 2026?

Thursday, December 10, 2026, live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. That's 21 days after GTA 6's release.

When will The Game Awards 2026 nominees be announced?

The show hasn't said. In 2024 and 2025, nominees were revealed on a Monday 24 days before the ceremony, which would point to November 16, 2026, three days before GTA 6 launches.

Can fans vote GTA 6 into Game of the Year?

Not onto the shortlist, which the jury picks alone. Fans can vote once nominees are announced, but the public vote counts for only 10% of the result.

If GTA 6 isn't nominated in 2026, can it win in 2027?

Only if the 2026 cutoff falls before November 19, which would move it into the 2027 window. Otherwise it belongs to the 2026 show, and older games only return if the jury decides new content justifies it.

Is GTA 6 in the Golden Joystick Awards 2026?

No. The Golden Joysticks take place on November 11, 2026, eight days before GTA 6 launches, so it can't be part of this year's show.
