GTA 6 Age Rating Explained: ESRB M, PEGI 18 and What They Reveal

The ESRB, PEGI and boards from Australia to South Korea have now rated Grand Theft Auto VI. Here's what every label says about the game, and who it's really made for.

Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB in North America and PEGI 18 in Europe, and every board that has published a rating so far puts it at or near the top of its age scale. The labels flag violence, gore, nudity, sexual content, drugs, alcohol and strong language, plus one interactive element: in-game purchases.

Official Here's where Grand Theft Auto VI stands as of October 5, 2026, about six weeks before its November 19 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The ESRB rating comes from the board's own database; the others appear on PlayStation's regional store pages.

Official Three major boards haven't published anything yet. PlayStation's German store still shows USK Rating Pending, and the USK database has no GTA VI entry. Japan's CERO is listed as under review and Brazil's ClassInd as pending, while PlayStation's Mexican store simply carries the ESRB rating.

ESRB: M for Mature 17+

Official The ESRB's entry covers PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, lists Rockstar Games as publisher and gives the game an M. Reported The rating went public on October 1, 2026, when it appeared on Rockstar's official GTA VI site, as Screen Rant and Game Rant reported that day.

Content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up. May contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.

ESRB, definition of the M rating

Here's what the seven descriptors mean in the ESRB's own terms:

  • Blood and Gore: depictions of blood or mutilated body parts.
  • Intense Violence: graphic, realistic-looking conflict that can involve weapons, injury and death.
  • Strong Sexual Content: explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly with nudity.
  • Nudity: graphic or prolonged, not a passing glimpse.
  • Use of Drugs and Alcohol: characters consume illegal drugs and alcoholic drinks.
  • Strong Language and Mature Humor: explicit or frequent profanity, and adult humor that includes sexual references.

Official That list is identical, word for word, to the one on GTA V's current ESRB entry, and it stops short of the ESRB's top category, AO (Adults Only 18+). One difference: GTA V's page includes a long written summary of its content, while GTA VI's entry, as of October 5, carries only the short version.

PEGI 18 and the listing that disappeared

Official In Europe, PlayStation's UK store lists Grand Theft Auto VI as PEGI 18, with descriptors for extreme violence, sexual content, nudity and drugs, plus in-game purchases. That's PEGI's adult classification, applied when a game's violence becomes:

...a depiction of gross violence, apparently motiveless killing, or violence towards defenceless characters.

PEGI adds that glamorized drug use and explicit sexual activity also belong in this category.

Reported The more revealing document is one you can no longer read. A detailed PEGI 18 listing reportedly appeared on PEGI's website around October 2, 2026, and was removed soon after. Neither PEGI nor Rockstar has commented, and IBTimes UK noted it couldn't independently verify the text. Official On October 5, a search of PEGI's database returned no GTA VI entry.

According to Forbes, IBTimes UK and GTA BOOM, the pulled content notes said:

  • Reported Violence is bloody and realistic, and certain weapons can cause detailed decapitation and dismemberment. Players can harm civilians, criminals, police and animals.
  • Reported Drug use is frequent, and cocaine can be carried and used straight from the inventory.
  • Reported Sexual content includes nudity, sex scenes and occasional fetish scenes, and players can pay for private dances in nightclubs and physically interact with the dancers.
  • Reported Language is frequently strong, and discriminatory language can be heard on in-game TV and radio.

Treat these as reported details, not confirmed features: the text was public only briefly, and PEGI hasn't explained why it came down. The headline rating doesn't depend on them, because the store listing already shows PEGI 18.

Australia and New Zealand spell out sex scenes

Official Australia's Classification Board has given Grand Theft Auto VI an R 18+, its restricted adult category, and PlayStation's Australian store lists consumer advice for drug use, high impact violence and sex scenes. Official New Zealand's label is R18, with drug use, graphic violence, nudity, offensive language and sex scenes.

Reported That wording drew attention. Vice pointed out that GTA V's Australian advice simply said sex, while GTA VI's names sex scenes, but cautioned that the change doesn't prove the new game is more explicit. Our read: together with the ESRB's Strong Sexual Content descriptor, it points to depicted scenes rather than innuendo, though no board says how explicit they are.

Reported If you saw an MA 15+ or X 18+ label for GTA 6 in Australia earlier, outlets questioned both at the time; GTA BOOM noted that X 18+ is a film-only category. The current store rating is R 18+.

In-game purchases, and the label that's missing

Official Interactive elements inform rather than raise the age: the ESRB says they don't influence the rating assignment. GTA VI carries one, In-Game Purchases, which the ESRB uses when a game offers digital goods or premiums for real money. The definition is broad, covering anything from virtual currency and skins to subscriptions, season passes and upgrades.

Official Notice what isn't there. The ESRB has a separate label, In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items), for purchases where you don't know what you'll get, and GTA VI doesn't carry it. PlayStation's UK listing likewise shows plain in-game purchases, not paid random items.

Reported What can actually be bought is still an open question. In August, Kinda Funny hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller said Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson answered no when they asked whether GTA 6 has microtransactions, according to GameSpot and IBTimes UK. That answer covered the single-player game at launch, and Rockstar hasn't said what the In-Game Purchases notice refers to.

Official One cost to watch already exists: digital pre-orders include a free month of GTA+, and PlayStation's US store notes that it auto-renews. Most of the subscription's listed perks, such as a monthly GTA$ deposit and Shark Card bonuses, are for GTA Online, Rockstar's existing online game. Official The other gap is Users Interact, the ESRB notice for possible exposure to unfiltered user-generated content, including player-to-player communication. GTA V's current entry carries it alongside In-Game Purchases; GTA VI's doesn't. That matches how Rockstar describes the game, on its Newswire and on PlayStation's store pages: a single-player experience.

What the ratings reveal about GTA 6

Our take: on paper, the ratings describe a game in the same territory as GTA V rather than a big escalation. The ESRB list matches its predecessor's exactly, and every published rating is an adult or near-adult one. Jason and Lucia's crime story (meet the cast in our characters guide) arrives with the warning labels series fans already know.

If the pulled PEGI notes are accurate, the bigger change is how much of that content sits in your hands. Drugs you carry and use whenever you like, weapons that dismember and private dances you pay for read like systems you control, not scenes you watch. That's our interpretation of an unconfirmed text, so expect the full picture only once the game is out.

The missing Users Interact notice matters too. The version the ESRB rated flags no chat or user-generated content, which fits a single-player launch. The one commercial signal is the In-Game Purchases notice, and Rockstar has yet to say what's behind it.

Who GTA 6 is for: a parents' guide

Every board that has spoken agrees that Grand Theft Auto VI is made for adults. In the US the line is 17, in Europe, Australia and New Zealand it's 18, South Korea's label says 19+, and Saudi Arabia and the UAE say 21. How firmly that line is enforced depends on where you live:

  • US: the ESRB system is voluntary, but most major retailers age-check sales of M-rated games. The ESRB cites FTC figures showing unaccompanied children trying to buy an M game are stopped 87% of the time.
  • UK: PEGI 18 is legally enforceable, so retailers can't sell the game to under-18s. As the National Crime Agency's CEOP education site notes, that doesn't stop an adult buying it for a child.

If GTA VI is coming into a home with younger players, the ESRB's parental-controls guide is a good place to start. Console controls can block games by rating, cap or block spending, manage who kids play with online and limit screen time, all through a child account. With In-Game Purchases on the label and an auto-renewing GTA+ month attached to digital pre-orders, the spending settings matter as much as the age filter.

What is GTA 6 rated?

Official The ESRB rates it M for Mature 17+, and PlayStation's UK store lists PEGI 18. Australia has rated it R 18+, New Zealand R18 and South Korea 19+. Germany's USK, Japan's CERO and Brazil's ClassInd haven't published ratings yet.

Why is GTA 6 rated M?

The ESRB lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. It's the same set of descriptors as GTA V, and M means content generally suitable for ages 17 and up.

Does GTA 6 have in-game purchases?

Official The ESRB and PEGI labels both list in-game purchases, but Rockstar hasn't said what they are. Reported Kinda Funny's hosts said Rob Nelson told them the game has no microtransactions at launch. The label isn't the random-items version, so no paid loot boxes are flagged.

Can a 13-year-old play GTA 6?

Not according to the rating boards: 17+ in the US and 18 in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In the US ratings are guidance, while in the UK they bind retailers. At home the decision is yours, and console parental controls can enforce it.

Will GTA 6 have online multiplayer at launch?

Official Rockstar describes Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player experience, and its ESRB rating has no Users Interact notice, which GTA V's rating does carry. Reported Rockstar hasn't detailed any online mode for the new game.
