GTA 6 is going to be harder, slower and more reactive than GTA 5. That's the clearest takeaway from Edge magazine's cover story, in which Rockstar North's Rob Nelson played the current build of Grand Theft Auto VI live and unscripted for 90 minutes. The police lay spike strips and bring dogs, some drivers fight back when you steal their car, every vehicle has a fuel gauge, and storms can rock boats and damage aircraft. Here are the 25 new GTA 6 details from that demo, grouped so you can skim, plus what each one means when you start playing on November 19, 2026.
The video above walks through all 25 details. Everything in this article comes from Edge's report, published on GamesRadar+ on October 29, 2026. Lines marked as our advice or our read are ours, not Rockstar's.
How Edge saw GTA 6: a 90-minute live demo
Official Edge's Simon Parkin visited Rockstar North in Edinburgh, where Rob Nelson played the game for an hour and a half without a script. Aaron Garbut and Phil Hooker, who share the job of co-head of development with Nelson, answered questions along the way. That makes this the longest look at GTA 6 gameplay that anyone outside Rockstar has described so far.
The studio side of the story is worth a line too. Official About 900 people work at Rockstar North, and Sam Houser plays every milestone build with Nelson, on a cycle of 6 to 8 weeks. Rockstar Toronto led the world's population and research, and Rockstar San Diego built ambient events. The story waited until Red Dead Redemption 2 was finished.
If you read our IGN interview breakdown, you'll recognise Nelson's way of talking about the game. The Edge demo is where many of those ideas finally show up in play.
The world: map size, interiors and smarter pedestrians (details 1-5)
- The map is huge. Official Rockstar told Edge that Leonida's total landmass is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA IV, GTA V and RDR2 combined, roughly twice the size of GTA V. Our map guide covers every region.
- Far more interiors. Official Garbut says there are "an order of magnitude more" interiors than in earlier games, and every back alley is detailed. See which buildings you can enter.
- A disgust system. Official Jason grimaces and recoils in filthy places, such as a house trashed by a dog. Garbut said it started as a single reaction and grew into a full system.
- Pedestrians with personalities. Official The game has about 600,000 animations, and an LA-based team of writers, directors and producers worked only on non-player characters. Each pedestrian has traits: temperament, aggression, what they've seen and how you've treated them.
- Strangers push back. Official In the demo, a man Jason stared at unclipped his dog's leash, and the dog went after Jason.

The police: spike strips, K9 dogs and the police report (details 6-12)
This is the section that makes GTA 6 feel harder than GTA 5. The police don't just chase you; they work out who you are.
- A shotgun from a police car. Official About three minutes in, during a street arrest, Nelson opened the boot of an unattended police car and took a shotgun.
- Heat icons are the police report. Official The icons at the top of the screen show what the police know: your description, whether you were alone or with a partner, your clothing, CCTV and your weapon. Split up, change clothes and drop the weapon to shed each one. Our wanted system guide explains how heat works.
- Guns in hand scare people. Official Carrying a shotgun in your hands, rather than slung on your back, makes people edge away or challenge you. Drop it and you get some leeway before a wanted level.
- Spike strips. Official Police lay stinger strips across the road. In the demo, the getaway bike's tyre blew.
- K9 dogs. Official Right after the tyre went, a police Alsatian pinned Jason. GTA 6 police dogs are real, and they're fast.
- Shooting from the passenger seat. Official On a getaway you can switch to the passenger seat and shoot while your partner drives. Nelson called the driving partner "AI, but the good, old-fashioned sort".
- Car owners fight back. Official When you steal a car, some drivers flee, some are armed and fight back, the owner may call it in behind you, and newer cars can have trackers. More in our car theft guide.

Getting around: the fuel system, Scooter Bros and trains (details 13-17)
- Narrower roads. Official Nelson says roads are narrower than GTA V's, "a more believable size". Expect tighter chases and fewer clean escapes down wide boulevards.
- A fuel system. Official Every vehicle shows fuel and engine health. Fuel was only a report before; Edge's demo confirms it. The good news: fuel lasts a long way and refilling is quick.
- Scooter Bros. Official Pay a fee in the Scooter Bros app and someone delivers your car in seconds, then rides off on a scooter. Your whole arsenal is in its boot. Our phone apps guide covers the other apps.
- Fences are picky. Official An app lists the models fences want. High-end cars ping the police, the fence's drop-off has a signal blocker, and the payment depends on the car's condition. Official Story jobs stay locked until you raise cash, for example from a gas station, a jewellery store or a car for a fence.
- Buses and trains work. Official Public transport is fully working, and Phil Hooker has memorised the bus routes.
The GTA 6 weather system and a longer day (details 18-19)
- Longer days and nights. Official The day-night cycle is much longer than GTA V's. Sunsets linger and nights stretch. Nelson said that at GTA V's timings "everything felt too fast".
- Weather that moves. Official Clouds form and move on their own, driven by wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season. You can see a storm coming and drive into it. Roads get wet, buildings drip and surfaces dry at different rates. Wind rocks boats unless islands shelter the water, storms buffet planes and helicopters and can lightly damage them, and pedestrians run for shelter.

Jason and Lucia: Criminal Profile, closeness and marriage (details 20-23)
- The Criminal Profile shapes the story. Official It runs from "Professional" to "Irredeemable", shown with angel and devil icons, and it influences how Jason and Lucia's story unfolds. Our Criminal Profile guide goes deeper.
- Four levels of closeness. Official Jason and Lucia's relationship sits on a four-point scale, raised by beach walks, cycling, the gym (after you buy a membership) and driving around together. See our relationship system guide.
- Marriage? Official Nelson refused to confirm or deny it. Edge notes the pair can't turn away from each other entirely.
- Quitting crime is a theme. Official The story asks what happens if these characters want something else.
It's yours to keep or yours to lose.

Daily life and random encounters (details 24-25)
- Food and habits matter. Official Coffee boosts stamina, a protein shake buffs health, and Jason smokes cigarettes from his inventory. Our safehouses and things to do guide covers more of daily life.
- The world comes to you. Official Youths in a 4x4 with purple underglow bullied Nelson into a street race. Random encounters are back, and they don't wait for you to find them.
Official Nelson also gave an example of the satire: a town that's unusually patriotic, with a biker gang that loves the police, in the middle of a mayoral race.
Our take: five day-one rules for GTA 5 players
Our read of the demo is simple: habits that worked for ten years in GTA 5 will get you caught in GTA 6. These are our suggestions, not Rockstar's.
| Rule | Why (from the demo) |
|---|---|
| Don't stare at people or flash a gun in a crowd | Pedestrians remember you and some fight back |
| Park your getaway car and check the tank before a job | Every vehicle has fuel and engine health |
| After a job, split up and change clothes | Each heat icon is a line in the police report you can shed |
| Don't run from the police on foot | K9 dogs caught Jason in seconds |
| Watch your Criminal Profile | It moves the story between Professional and Irredeemable |
It also explains Garbut's closing line to Edge: "I feel like we've built a pyramid on Everest." Nelson's was shorter: "It's ready." For the bigger list of launch tips, read our things to know before you play, and keep an eye on the countdown.
FAQ
Will GTA 6 have police dogs?
Yes. Official In Rockstar's demo for Edge, a police Alsatian chased down and pinned Jason after a spike strip blew the tyre of his getaway bike. K9 units are part of how the police catch you on foot.
Does GTA 6 have a fuel system?
Yes. Official Every vehicle shows fuel and engine health. Rockstar says fuel lasts a long way and refilling is quick, so it's something to check before a job rather than a constant chore.
How big is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?
Official Rockstar told Edge that Leonida's landmass is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined, which makes it roughly twice the size of GTA V.
What is the Criminal Profile in GTA 6?
Official It's a scale from "Professional" to "Irredeemable", shown with angel and devil icons, that tracks how you play. Rockstar says it influences how Jason and Lucia's story unfolds.
Is there a GTA 6 demo you can play?
Not that Rockstar has announced. The 90-minute demo was played by Rockstar's Rob Nelson for Edge magazine at Rockstar North, not released to players. Official The game itself launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and any "GTA 6 demo download" link is a scam (see our fake downloads guide).
Where can I read the full Edge GTA 6 cover story?
It's in Edge issue 430 (November 2026), and the full feature, "Grand Theft Auto VI – The state that never sleeps" by Simon Parkin, was published free on GamesRadar+ on October 29, 2026. It's linked in the sources below.
